Rubber Hero/Batman Type Undersuit - Advice?

You know the batman or hero body suits that are made of rubber? see http://artsee1.com/pageslinked/store.html

I'd love to be able to make one for my master chief costume. Basically a turtleneck t-shirt of sorts. I'm sculpting it on a manequinn and clay right now, and I'd love to know how I will go about turning into a rubberized midsection, or a rubberized neck seal .

I need this from a "material to buy from smooth-on standpoint". What I'd need is the silicon mold making material, and the casting rubber. Such that they don't stick to each other.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

You should check out the rebound25 from smooth-on or perhaps smooth-sil945? For the latex I would suggest a mask latex. The number is RD407 which is a soft grade mask latex. Try Monstermakers or fxwarehouseinc.com

If you're going to use a silicone mold I believe you're going to want to cast in urethane. I do a lot of latex casting and use plaster molds, but fiberglass works really well too. From my understanding urethane and silicone don't like to work together.

There might be a typo in what you're trying to say, or I'm reading it wrong.

You say if I make the mold in Silicon, I SHOULD cast in Urethane?

Then, you say they don't work well together. I'm not sure exactly what you mean.

oh crap, I meant you shouldn't cast latex in a silicone, but urethane would be fine(from what I hear) sorry.

Matt is right, urethane does work well with latex, just remember you should brush in thin layers. Dont try to pour it in thick or it will just cure on top and pull away from the mold. I am speaking from experience on this one.

what you need is a tin based silicone for the mold, not sure a smooth on product but its an easy question, i prefer something which cures to a shore 30ish.

as for the casting rubber, you will need to use urethane, you have to make a plaster or stone mold to cast in latex as the plaster absorbs the water in latex to enable it to cure evenly, silicone wont do this.

i find that smooth-on vytaflex is a great urethane rubber and works well with tin based silicone, fo ra torso piece, i'd opt for either a 30shore or 40 depending on the thckness of the cast.

hope that helps
