RPF New Look Feedback Thread

I created a very quick mock up of how I feel the header area might be better served. I am a fan of the icons, I just think they're out of place on top sitting like that... I 'd keep them, shrink them a bit move them lower and add the Replica Props Forum on top the forum where I think it belongs.

Again, this was done quickly... fonts are just fillers, etc. and the image was shrunk to make it more managable.

I actually dig the fixed-width. Helps me format my paragraphs more specifically.

Not totally sold on the logo, for many of the reasons already mentioned here, but I can appreciate what you're trying to do with it. We certainly needed a cleaner logo ... actually we just needed a logo. The Dremel-man was always too detailed and graphic for a logo, to my way of thinking, and I think with this one we may have gone too far in the other direction.

I dig the icons for each section, but agree that the final three on the right do not match the style of the others. Maybe something carrying over the 50s inspired look with vintage style silhouettes rather than the bathroom sign guys that are there now. As to the previous suggestion of ditching the monochrome and adding some color to the icons, I think that might be something worth exploring.

Great job guys! I know you've spent countless hours discussing, creating and refining the final product. While I'm usually the last person to desire change, especially with the warm and fuzzy SW theme that has been carried through over the years, I think this is a great step forward for the RPF and sure to help take it in the new and improved direction.

I really, really love the new look. And I'm like stromo; normally these forum upgrades are pains to deal with. This is great. It's more attractive, and it kept everything I liked about the old forum. Well done!!

Would there be a way eventually to have an option to turn off fixed width? It's the only thing for those of us with wide-screen monitors and laptops screens that I find unpalatable about the new design.

Otherwise, a really great look.

Personally, I love the new look. Nice job to all involved :thumbsup

I think if I got too caught up in the look of a particular site, I would lose the
whole concept and reasoning of why the site exists.. BUT, it does make me
feel more professional. So much so that I wanna go dremmel something :)

I just wanted to mention that regardless of the "Junkyard/Marketplace" name debate, some of the stuck announcements should be updated to reflect the name change. Like in the "What this forum is all about... " stickies in the different forum sections, they still refer to the Junkyard as the place to go for selling. So they should probably be changed to avoid confusion.

Yup, we are slowly working on that.

As I mentioned before, we are pretty set on the first 5 icons, but I am up for seeing some mockups to replace the final three (my efforts). I do really like the film reel discussion bubbles, but other than that, we are up for suggestions and ideas.

I just noticed the icons and the Marketplace needs to be changed to a bleeding wallet. :lol

:lol:lol:lol Either that or an empty wallet.

I like the new look for the most part. I prefer the Junkyard title instead of Marketplace; Marketplace just seems too sterile while junkyard had a certain character, even if it is only a place to buy/sell.

Regarding the icons: I actually like the last 3 much, much better than the first 5, with the costuming section being my favorite icon. I don't care for the rayguns at all.

For the OT: An UFO in the rear bubble, an airplane laying down chemtrails in the top bubble.

By the way, as opposed as I am to "The Marketplace", you might want to consider adding a hover text to "Junkyard" and "JY" to expand to "The Marketplace." (For those who don't know what I'm talking about, hover over the RPF acronym in this very sentence.)

The overall look is fine, but I'm not liking the fixed width. I don't get the "trend" aspect that you mentioned in the announcement thread, because the trend for home computers these days is widescreen monitors. Setting it up for 1024x768 is, to say the least, antiquated.
