Hi Guys.....this is a hard to categorise thread/announcement

Guy Cowan is organising a group build competition over on FaceBook on his Archive X page,

Guy says:

For the next competition Im thinking of doing a ROTJ MPC Xwing paint up, plenty of these still out there from the ANH to Jedi they are basically the same kit from MPC /Ertl

Who would be interested in a an attempt at replicating this ILM Screen used replica from ROTJ?

NB: It doesn't have to be with archive-X paint, its entirely the artists decision

Thanks to Propstore for releasing these amazing images too !

Archive-X

The idea is to paint up the MPC model of the X-Wing that was used in Return of the Jedi....so yes, a commercial model used in the film, & also that makes it Studio Scale....

Here's the MPC filming prop that Guy would like replicated

I just purchased all the paints from guy to paint one of these up last week,he mentioned he bought a few of these kits and intended to do the same thing.it was a pleasure doing business with him and these paints look spot on to the originals used by ilm.anybody doing any painting of Star Wars models or helmets should look into these paints.

Competition is finished,....judging soon

Didn't have time to finish mine although the finishing date was extended

Can't wait to see the winner

Probably John Simmons will win this one

I'm not so sure, his was really good, but I think David Emmerich's was the best one in my opinion. I certainly don't expect to win, I'll just be happy if I make it into the finals.

I'm not 1000% sure but I think that this is the same model that was used in the distance shots of the x-wing going to Dagobah in TESB... great idea.

I noticed this thread refers to this model as being from RoTJ, but PropsStore where the photos were taken says it's from ESB in the shot where it escorts the Medium Transport out of Hoth. Can someone confirm if it was the same model used in both films? And if it was from RoTJ, which shot(s) was it used in?

Well.... i don't think there is a definitive answer. Models like this were used on Empire and Jedi. The Propstore one is just one that made it through production. But yeah multiples were made. Most likely back ground Endor Battle, I'm pretty confident the escape from Hoth scene was one.

Propstore also had a smaller Jedi Y-Wing model and a friend of mine and I are reproducing at the moment. You can see that one clearly at the moment when the Rebel fighters meet the oncoming TIE fighter at Endor. That Y just happens to be exactly in scale with the MPC X-Wing so I'm guessing both were used in the Endor Battle.

marvin Thanks, I’ve seen that Y-Wing also but never realised the scale was the same. It makes sense that it was re-used for Jedi, just like Red 3 from A New Hope was re-painted into Red 5 for ESB.

The x-wing is a red 5 model - and red 5 didn't escort the transports... it did fly off in a far away shot towards Dagobah :). That's the only place I'm sure it was used. I was thinking maybe the approach to Bespin, but looking at screen grabs from that scene I don't think so...

Sorry Talaris,...I'm only going by the competition title from Facebook, It does say on one of the photos that it was from ESB 1980, but I was just distributing the news:

Think the winner will be announced shortly,....the 5 finalists are: Alexandre Hilpert, David Emmerichs, Marc Carnet, Michel Bondo Hansen, Nicolas Huguet

Jaitea No need to be sorry! I’m just curious, as previously I had first heard about the MPC kit being used in RotJ, then I saw this PropStore video on YouTube:

Here, they confirm their model belonged to Brian Johnson, who received it as a gift for his work on ESB, and confirm it was used in the shot where the Rebel transport escapes Hoth.

I have the same BluRay, but did not notice it shows another MPC kit being used! Perhaps this one (or both) were used in the Battle of Endor. I appreciate your research.

an interesting note is that ILM also inverted the wings so they are technically upside down from the instructions. Probably so they could get that nice little bit of detail that should be on the bottom from where the wings kind of snapped together.

So many great entries in this contest. I have yet to finish mine but here is where I left off.

I had no idea this was on the BluRay! I have a spare fully built and primed MPC that I was going to use for paint tests for the comp, but I didn't end up painting it...I think I'll give this one shot with it!

I have two more kits as well. One still in the box and the other already primed and ready to go. Though I did invert a few parts just to add variety to it
