ROTJ E-11 Builds

This is why I’ve been using certain middle-ground film canisters. They’re not as accurate as these caps - but man these caps are flimsy. I was worried about the slight tilt of the front piece on these canisters… the caps are so thin I’m amazed the tips don’t just bend on their own weight!

I still plan to modify one, I have a hair spray here, maybe I’ll do an experiment ;)

They are pretty flimsy caps, I think the cap used on the original scope was a tad bit thicker. Either way, using a hex nut on the interior of the cap should help support the tip piece.

you'd be surprised lol the hext nut does help though.

I've found the strength of the center of the bottom is what decides whether it will tilt. That's the direction it collapses, even with my brass nuts on there.

update: I have had a scope rail prototype machined out of aluminum, as well as the scope bell out of black delrin. I am also working on having the scope cap produce out of polypropylene, and correct machined brass countersunk washers.

I now have a limited run thread open for the scope rail if anyone wants to be on the list.

I ended up having a small run of 13 sets of hammers made up, three of which are for my builds. I am confident that my digital model is exact with the numerous reference photos and measurements provided by DarthWilder. At the worst it’s a mm or so off, but I won’t sweat it. The process of metal casting creates pretty wide tolerances, so variances from one hammer casting to another are common.

Next I will be placing an order to have the Nakata block greeble reproduced. I have quotes for both aluminum casting or machining, and I really am not quite sure which to choose. My goal is to reproduce these parts with similar techniques and materials, just as I did with the hammer greebles. Considering the quality of the surface, I am leaning toward machined aluminum. Please feel free to chime in with your thoughts as well regarding this.

Yep, I think you will be flooded with orders! I have the real parts, and yours look virtually identical with the exception of coloring/patina. I would want three sets of hammers and blocks, myself. :)

nice. I guess the zinc cast is a really good option for the block greebly as well, don't you think?
Originally I had planned to cast them out of zinc, but I had come to find out from DarthWilder that his original block piece is made from a considerably lighter material which we believe to be aluminum. The hammers in comparison are much heavier.

Update: DarthWilder was so kind to provide me with hundreds of photos of the firing block to create a 3d photogrammetry scan. Using the scan, I scaled it to the dimensions he had measured and modeled directly overtop of the scan. His firing block had seen some use, so I had to fill in for those areas, but overall it was very valuable, allowing me to create a 1:1 copy. Big thanks to you DarthWilder for taking the time to setup and photograph this little block from hundreds of different angles.

I will be having a run of parts made very soon.

Here are comparison photos of the original hammer and block parts next to my reproductions. The reproductions are made of the same materials and with the same manufacturing techniques as the original parts. Big thanks to DarthWilder for collaborating with me to produce these parts. Looking forward to installing them soon!
