Hummmmm, looks like this is all leveling out a bit now. I think that the tremendous success of TFA has probably caused Disney to rein in their impulse to be very "experimental" with the franchise at the moment. Lets be honest, if TFA HAD performed less well then maybe they would have allowed it to try for a none PG rating, but my guess is they are now looking towards the Marvel Comic Universe formula , ie a stronger balance between action , character ,humour and interwoven storylines and that general all round audience appeal. Rogue One was always going to be a dark story but its never been entirely clear just how far it would be allowed to go.
My feeling is they (Disney) are now micro managing this, given that the new SW franchise is still really in its infancy, having lost its creator and probably an awful lot of influential input and fresh starting it was always going to be a little bit of a challenge. It really took the success of " Iron Man " to shape the Marvels "design" for their future universe of the series and then they have built spectacularly upon the format ,fine tuning the elements that appealled to audiences and critics alike as they went. Look at how "Captain America" developed with each successive film, not only in terms of Box office returns but also in script and story quality, while not wandering hugely away from the franchise "formula". I think they are also trying to do the same with SW now they feel they know whats likely to be best recieved by the general public.
A couple of things that I take issue with:
Firstly the extensive use of CGI as an excuse is misdirected. This was a very physical shoot and the stunt team was massive . There will be green screen obviously but I doubt it will be much more than TFA and few people have mentioned the location shooting in Iceland and Jordan. And I would doubt they are going to reshoot on massive sets, it would take to long to rebuild them BUT I do note they could probably take advantage of certain current ones that have been constructed recently if the Solo cameo is going to be bigger than first anticipated and its to become its own standalone series.Or perhaps R1 will have a stronger link to TFA than we ever imagined.
And it maybe that some characters needed the additional dialogue and scenes to flesh their performance out ie if there is a particular opportunity with Alans robot for more comic scenes as they did with BB8, or even add more screen time with Vader or perhaps even the Emperor. Maybe the moted Tarkin facial effects do not quite work .
Lets face it the exact same "panic" happend with the "Suicide Squad " reshooting for exactly the same reported reasons ie it was a potential DC "disaster" yet on the back of it they are already looking to develope a "Harley Quin" standalone.
With the 2016b Celebration only six weeks away a lot of this will be cleared up, but it will be interesting to see whats said given that the reshoots will be happening about then.
