Well, part of the confusion for people now is there's been one trailer and it didn't go out of it's way IIRC to say it was before ANH. Certainly made no effort to reinforce it. Aside from that, the marketing has been pretty much non-existant at this point.
I agree they they need something to tell the clueless it's pre ANH.
Before Luke could blow up the death star...someone had to steal the plans....
People here a star wars movie is coming out in december and think E8 because they were never in it enough to read the tiny blurbs saying otherwise. If you're not a big fan, you'd likely think the same thing. E8? Already? Cool! As for looking it up, if you think you know what it's about you don't look it up to prove yourself right, you simply assume you're right. You won't look into until someone tells you otherwise. Then you'd investigate.
But yes, the advertising will be important. But as of now, there's pretty much been none.
I'm curous about the test audiences either. With no advertising, i imagine a lot of them had no clue what was going on for the longest time. Even if the scroll spells it out for you ad nasuem, if you were invited a week out and were told 'the star wars movie coming out in december' and you thought that was E8, you'd just be WTF the first portion of the movie which would color your opinion. They needed fans to test it with, not random people.

Since I first heard that title my brain hears: "A Christmas Story."
You'll blast your EYE out...
It is coming out the week before christmas, so from a certain point of view, it is a christmas story
