I don't know what is worse, the smell of spirt gum in the morning or having that make-up on in costume on the beach and watching Chuck run around in a Speedo!

That was awesome, and they got the appliances on pretty quick

In edited home movie footage, sure. In reality, it took 3-6 hours every day for each actor, and 60-90 minutes to remove it at the end of the day.

It's rare to get such a raw, behind the scenes peek of an iconic film; in such clear image quality too.
    Wish there was much more.

    Thanks for posting :thumbsup

That was ape-tastic!! Loved getting a look inside their mouths after all these years.

    Thanks,

Thanks for posting that, I love seeing behind the scenes footage for the apes movies, especially something as intimate as that.

Very cool. I'm amazed they didn't get permission to put these in one of the box sets.

God, I wish there were home movies taken by any cast or crew members of Star Wars (or ESB or ROTJ).

I love when the makeup man puts the very first prosthetic piece up to Roddy's face, how the actor instantly transforms into an ape, into Cornelius.

    What great film footage!

ps~I feel bad for the gorgeous Nova, though...she looked like she was trying so hard to speak, yet still no sounds came out of her mouth.

He was * good with that camera too. Very steady and smooth with it's movements, and he had an eye for framing shots.

I spy with my little eye -- Check it out at 9:09 - two white stage buildings below. Standing upright at the corner of the left one is the ICARUS Spaceship. AWESOME! Thanks for posting this.

    Your a god! great eye.

Sadly we know it rotted on the backlot afterwards, did it not end up as a roadside motel decoration for a while?

Since the chopper is moving, I can make a stereoscopic pair later today just for fun.

I think this clip is one of the best POTA makeup application footages I've seen. I particularly enjoyed watching the technique for applying hair strands around the hairline. It also gives some fantastic shots of the inside of the mouth. It certainly makes one want to break out the latex...

You know the full size Jupiter ended up as part of Brent's crashed ship in Beneath the Planet of the Apes.

The landing gear from the Jupiter is that whole wrecked section right?

    That's a roger.

Phil Broad has pix, but I don't believe he's posted them to Cloudster yet.

The motel in question subsequently burned down, sometime during the mid-90's, and the remains of the "Apes" ship went with it.

The McDowell footage was the subject of a lengthy thread on HobbyTalk a few years back. Scott Alexander posted a terrific studio lot shot of the "Apes" ship taken sometime prior to its "truncation" for "Escape." I'll see if I can dig it up.

Well, the wreck consisted of the full scale mockup from the first film, random bits of smashed and charred hull, and the Jupiter 2 landing gear.

I wonder if when they trucked it out to the lake it was visable to other cars?
That would have been a hoot, people would think it was the real deal back then.

That's got to be before they made the first movie. Looks too new.

GREAT PICS. Rarely do I see something new these days.

March of `69 (post "Apes" 1 but prior to "Apes" 2).

Scott took these himself while on a tour of the backlot.

You need glasses, my friend. It reads:

    Mar 68

Still, the photos were taken about a month after the movie premiered in February of that year.

Hey, the late 60's are blurry for a lot of people.

    :)

Point is, Scott Alexander's shots were taken after the location shoot for the first film, and they show the ship in the same spot on the backlot as depicted in the McDowell footage.
