Roddy McDowall 1:1 Scale Cornelius FINISHED PICS PG 3!!

Hi all!

I know I'm a newbie here, but I thought I'd share my first sculpted piece in the 1:1 scale realm. My specialty is usually smaller sculpts for the toy and collector hobby biz, but I have done prosthetic make-up in lifesize and have even done larger-than-life museum and retail displays around the U.S. as well. For some reason, I've always had a mental block about tackling a 1:1 scale human model. Maybe because of the familiarity folks have with the human face. It's hard to get it right because people may not know what a dinosaur really looked like, but they sure do know what a person looks like!

Well, with special thanks to Howard S. for his support and encouragement, I recently dove in on this commission. Roddy here will soon have the Chambers Ape make-up sculpted on his face, but I couldn't resist playing with the textures and such. Ultimately, I spent WAY too much time sculpting details that won't even be seen once I sculpt the Ape brows and muzzle, but I couldn't resist!

I look forward to your feedback! I'll be posting follow-up pics as the Ape makeup is sculpted...I hope you all like what you see so far!

That's an incredible sculpt, Scott, you have quite the talent. Kind of a shame to sculpt over it.

Beautiful sculpt. It's just clay, so finish this one and do another with the ape makeup.

Roddy played some great characters over the years, but one of my favorites was on the old Fantasy Island. He played the Devil. He was sneaky but with humor. He was truly one of the greats.. Your sculpt seems to capture him well.

WOW, what a great introduction. Easily recognizable. Very fine work indeed.

You could mold it and do a master cast and then continue working on the clay sculpt. It would be a shame to conceal such a great piece.

Wow incredible talent! I agree, cast it before going on.

Wow! Thanks for the kind words, guys!

I've really thought about it, maybe even pulling a quick alginate mold to commemorate it, but in the end I guess I know I can always do a better expression and pose for Mr. McDowall! LOL! I must admit, the idea of doing a Peter Vincent to keep all my other lifesized "monsters" at bay does make me giddy! Maybe I'll get a chance to revisit him some day.

HOW do you get that DETAIL on the SKIN???

I use many different wire tools to get the skin texture. I guess since most of the time I'm restricted to 1:6 scale pieces, now that I have such a huge "canvas", I can't help but play!

It takes a light touch in most cases for maximum results...Most of tools I'm using are for the smaller sculpts I do. Since the clay I'm using is so hard, I treat it more like wax than traditional oil based NSP.

I'd love to see more of what you've done. Do you have a website or somewhere where you are showing it off?

Awesome talent! :cheers

LOL! The good news is that early on in the design stage, I decided I'd leave Roddy's teeth visible behind the prostetic so if you peek in, you'll see the blacked-out teeth just like in the Chambers make-up! So it won't all be a waste! LOL!

This reminds me of the way Phil, cyberman, did his Emperor sculpt. He started out with sculpting the actor and then sculpted the appliance on top of that. It's that extra level of attention and care put into the sculpt that's so damn impressive.

Right now, most of my sculpts are on my facebook page under Scott C. Fensterer . Quite a few albums there of different scaled stuff I've done. I also did a dozen or so heads for this season's Robot Chicken (Season Five), but I can't show pics until the episodes have aired! LOTS of fun stuff there!

I've been working on a website for a while and lost money to a couple of guys who never delivered. I am working on it, tho!

Scott,

Just how did you get the skin surface looking so real? You can see the pores of the skin and tiny wrinkles. Its amazingly real.

Mostly just Kemper and some home-made wire tools I usually use on smaller scale pieces. Oh! And a LOT of patience! Pores are sculpted one at a time! LOL!

You didn't happen to do the TV Batman 1/1 Shakesphere bust about 10 years ago did you?

Yup! That was mine...Although I am planning to re-do it later this year or early next year. Looking at it today, it just isn't as exact as it could be. Back in 1996, reference material was in very short supply and I sculpted it working from two pictures in an auction catalog and a couple of photographs I took off a paused video I had back then! My how times have changed! I've logged in quite a few hours since then and keep hoping someone will commission one again!

I did do a 1:6 scale version recently for someone's 12 inch figure display...
