rocket raccoon WIP

I've never heard of doing a hot wax cast - do you have a link to a tutorial, or more information?

I got the idea from a fair. What you do is get a deep bowl with ice water and deep pan for melting wax in. I had an old old pot that is nice and tall. The wax has to be enough to fill up the pot and cover up to your wrists. I used old candles and bought huge candles from the $1 store. Start heating it up to a temperature where it just melts all the wax. You lotion up your hand, then dunk it in the ice water first for 30 seconds or till its cold. Dunk in the melted wax quickly then back into the ice water, back into the wax then back into the water over and over and over to get the thickness you want. When you are done end on the icewater. Here comes the cruddy part, getting your hand free. It takes many tries sometimes. If it cracks you can push it back into place, then dunk the area with the crack only (without getting wax inside) to repair. Let it dry, then pour the plaster or whatever inside. I use this for hands mainly as I'm not sure if I could get the wax off without breaking. I broke the mould to get the hand out, but I could reuse the wax. It's a nice cheap way to get what I need :)

I have never done anything like this before, cosplay/furry stuff, but I am planning to attempt to make at Rocket Raccoon fursuit. I have never been any good at anything artistic, but I am very excited to try. I think I am going to trying to commission my neighbor, a chainsaw wood carver, to carve the head base. After that, I plan to purchase Raccoon pelts from my friend, who traps them. I bought an orange jumpsuit, which I am going to attempt to tailor into looking like Rocket's jumpsuit, and then I will attempt to create the backpack and the gun somehow. This is all very new to me, so I hope it goes well.

If anyone has any tips, let me know. Thank you for your walkthrough of your amazingly well done project.

Awesome work. My little 10 year old girl wants to go as Rocket and I am going as Star Lord. I have TONS of work still left to do and am having to outsource a lot of it due to time constraints. Your work has helped me a lot on working on the costumes. Thanks for posting this.

Awesome!! Love when people cosplay with their families together :) I hear ya about the tons of work to do. I just got a pattern Im going to modify for my 12 year olds starlord jacket.I wish you luck and hope to see progress with your stuff!

Sweet, thanks for that info! No idea when/if I will put it to use, but it sounds very cool.

I've used it twice, this, and for resin bond hands for my zombie motorcycle project lol. Comes in use randomly.

GREAT idea for the hand cast! Way cheaper than silicone/alginate... I'm going to have to ruthlessly steal it. ;)

lol steal away. Yup I can't afford the alginate or silicone. I'm just happy when ideas work for what I need!

I figured you would get a kick out of this. I thought this was a puppet, but it is a preprogrammed Rocket Raccoon robot! Go to 1:57 in the video.

Been swamped so I haven'tworked much. Stopped on hand sculptures for a little bit because I had used up most of my clay using it for other projects. I did alter my templates for his orange bounty suit. Some has seam allowances, others I need to add when I trace. They are labeled front and back appropriately. I still have to make the template for the leather like fabric in the groin, and I'm adding a zipper because 6 year old boys pee alot ^_^ the fabric I chose is an older soft thick canvas. I will be distressing it and making it look used with airbrushing etc. 20140928_201419.jpg20140928_201444.jpg20140928_202409_LLS.jpg

Got the front and back pieces done with 5/8" seam allowances. Hope to get this sewed up soon. Dont know why my camera made this look so pink , haha. well, I'll probably work on the shoulder pads next till i get some clay! 20140929_214332.jpg
