Wow, this sucks. I'll always think of him as "Doc" in 'Escape From Alcatraz'.

RIP, sir. I always remember him as "Wild Bill" in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, especially his bit about having seen big foot.
 
I remember him most as Ezra Cobb in Deranged.

Although when I was on holiday in Egypt once, I was talking to an Egyptian barman in the hotel about movies one night. He was explaining that being a Muslim country they didn't have that great access to western films. But he tried to explain one that he liked but didn't know the title of. He said it had something to do with a young child who was scared of the cannibal that lived next door. I sat there in the bar for ages trying to work out what the film was, it sounded great and I can't belive I'd never seen it. Then it suddenly dawned on me he was talking about Home Alone :lol
