Don't know exactly when he passed, and there is nothing on the internet to confirm this. However, the following is from Gunny's Facebook page and Bill Rogin, R Lee's manager.

Statement from R. Lee Ermey's long time manager, Bill Rogin:
It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey ("The Gunny") passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia. He will be greatly missed by all of us. It is a terrible loss that nobody was prepared for. He has meant so much to so many people. And, it is extremely difficult to truly quantify all of the great things this man has selflessly done for, and on behalf of, our many men and women in uniform. He has also contributed many iconic and indelible characters on film that will live on forever. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman of Full Metal Jacket fame was a hard and principled man. The real R. Lee Ermey was a family man, and a kind and gentle soul. He was generous to everyone around him. And, he especially cared deeply for others in need.
There is a quote made famous in Full Metal Jacket. It's actually the Riflemen's Creed. "This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine."
There are many Gunny's, but this one was OURS. And, we will honor his memory with hope and kindness. Please support your men and women in uniform. That's what he wanted most of all.
    Semper Fi, Gunny. Godspeed.

Man watching Mail Call with my Army veteran grandfather is one of my earliest memories of our relationship. I didn't realize until much later that he was a well known character actor in his own right. Sad news :(

His second career in movies enabled me to point at him and say, there, see. That's just how it is.

    Semper Fi, Gunny.

What a loss! I've always enjoyed R.Lee Ermey's work. He had such range, from drill instructor to his role in Saving Silverman. He lived a full life bringing joy to his fans!

*. We've already lost too many great people this year. I think that regardless of his movie roles, I have even more respect for his service and his charity work for the troops.

Ermey was also a major spokesman for Glock firearms. And made videos to raise awareness about voting for gun owners.

Most of it was comedic in nature and you can still find it all on youtube.

Frikkin' pneumonia... I have seen that word so often in the last few years of celebrity deaths. You'd think we'd be better at dealing with it by now... :(

Not exactly Mr. Versatility as an actor, but he was fun to watch, and if the role called for his type he was perfect. Relentless in FMJ and the perfect voice for the plastic soldier in Toy Story.

    Rest easy.

Yeah it took my mom some years ago.

I loved mail call. It may have been the start of my interest in firearms. I remember he used .45 rounds as ear plugs.

This is what allowed me to meet him. He would come in for Glock days at a store I worked. What surprised me most about him is he was actually a pretty big guy. I expected him to be smaller, but he was 6 foot tall easily. Great sense of humor and didn't take himself too seriously. Condolences to his family and friends.

R Lee Ermey etched an indelible mark on cinema that is now a part of its history. If that were all he was remembered for, he'd still be awesome. But as others have pointed out, acting was only one thing he did.

    RIP, Gunny.
