RIP Peter (Speed Racer) Fernandez

Gone but not forgotten.
This really saddens me - y'know when I was a kid in Pasadena Texas, growing up Mexican in one of the most red neck towns (we had Gilley's there and were famous for Urban cowboy) was no rose garden. i've been called just about every racist name in the book - all before I was even 12. I can remember dads telling girlfriends of mine "how can you date a wetty" and junk like that. I can remember only a couple of Mexicans on tv - Freddie Prinze and Cheech. I can also remember noticing that the man's name in the Speed Racer credits was close to mine - Peter (Paul) Fernandez (Hernandez) and I thought that was the coolest thing in the world. I met Peter a few times over the years - the best was when I was with my father in law at a car show and Peter was there - I talked with him for a long while and he was the nicest man you'd ever want to meet (course he was captivated by my pop in law) but I wanted to hug the guy and tell him - thanks for not changing your name and helping me take pride in mine. Good night Peter - i know you were just a voice - but as with the David Prowse discussion - you will always be Speed Racer to me. He also did voices for Ultraman - which makes me only love him more.

Well, when you're married to you-know-who's daughter, who wouldn't be!? ;)

I'd love t talk with Mr. S too!

Neat connection though, regarding their meeting. What with high performance vehicles and all (albeit animated, in one case).

All right, who are ya married to, Jet? LOL.

That's a poignant memory - I remember watching Speed Racer every day after school, too. It was captivating!

That's a shame. I remember running home from school so I would make it in time for the opening credits and song. Speed Racer and the Mach V will always have a special place in my heart.
GodSpeed Mr Fernandez.

IIRC, he wasn't just the voice of Speed, but was voice director and was the chief person responsible for putting together the English scripts.

May there be no brats or monkeys in the trunk during your trip to the hereafter, Peter.

(moff, Jet has mentioned previously that his father-in-law is Carroll Shelby)

Paul, I will hurt you. Freddie was Puerto Rican. Don't try stealing our stars. We have so few. :p

That said, it is sad to lose another Latino who has contributed to our collective childhoods.

Oh, forgive me kind sir. I only went by parts of his act where he claimed being Mexican - and if you think Puerto Rican's have few stars - try Mexican in 1975 -- heck, try Mexican NOW.:lol

RIP Peter, thank you for adding to my fun childhood memories. I was just re-reading the Speed Racer book that came out in the 90's and he talks about the things he did on the show.
