Another one gone. Besides writing and directing The Deer Hunter, he also wrote Silent Running, Magnum Force, and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot.

Loved most of his work, especially The Deer Hunter, epic film even if he did get so much flack about it

He gave us many great films...and alas also Heaven's Gate. I watched it once thinking that maybe like Waterworld it wasn't that bad a movie, just bad press and misunderstood. NOPE, every minute sucked. Ah well, thanks for all the other great ones Michael, R.I.P.

I never had a problem with Heavens Gate. Aside from needing a little judicious editing, I think it's a fine film. Beautifully shot if nothing else. I'd take it over 90% of the remakes and formulaic "safe" films made today.
