Rincewind suit in progress (Updated 10-28)

EDIT: Retitled the thread to a more accurate name

I've seen so many cool ideas and helpful posts here I'm anxious to get started on my suit. Just waiting on a few more supplies which are in transit.

I bought a Mr. Incredible suit to form the base of my suit, but I thought I might caution anyone looking at this option:
The large standard adult Mr. I suit is for someone 5'9" to 5'11" tall. I am 6'4" barefoot and weigh 240lbs. The "belt" stitched onto the suit comes just under my ribs. This means the abdominal muscles in the suit will end a bit above the waistline. We'll see how it looks after latexing and painting it.

I got a gallon of latex and I'm waiting on a set of latex pigments from Monster Makers so I can experiment with a solid base color.

I've been working on a duct-tape mannequin of myself too...the first one had a bit of an issue when I filled the lower half with Great Stuff expanding foam (which doesn't expand for crap in all honesty...the "large gaps" variety too) and didn't think when I laid it down. The foam settled due to gravity and really redefined "a flat butt". And legs too. So I had to start another one which I will probably stuff with cushion foam or something like that...I'm open to suggestions.

When I started talking about doing this, my sister ordered a Rubie's mask/bio combo for me as a gift (she sent it a few days ago...should be here any day). I know this is a "turd" but it's what I'll be starting with since my budget doesn't allow for anything better by Halloween. After that...some real armor and bio/undermask. I have some different size backer rod so I'm gonna try to reshape the mask into something a bit better. I could care less about the accuracy of the undermask....I only want it to look cool with the bio on. When the bio is off I'd like to be able to talk (and sip on a drink) since this will be a big party with friends.

Anyway...once the rest of my stuff gets here I'll get rolling and try to post some pictures of the progress. I'm in awe of the work many of the members here and really want to make something cool too.

Thanks for the inspiration... :D

Someone did their research here...nice to see! :D Now we have The Great Wizzard on board! Welcome!

That's pretty cool of your sister, btw. My bro likes what I do (being a guy and loving Predator as well), but most individuals of the female persuasion tend to not give a flying ****.

eh...my sisters have thought I was weird forever anyway. :D

They know I've always been fascinated with special effects and stuff, and while it's not their usual movie fare they have been impressed with Stan Winston's monsters and stuff. They each have their own hobbies so they understand the desire to amuse myself.

The sister who sent me the mask has 2 young boys (3 1/2 and 6) and they are wanting to be 10 different things for Halloween too...she just wants them to finally pick something so she can get it already!

BTW: I have a hat somewhere...with 2 Zs on it and everything...

Just noticed the other day that the new Discworld book "Making Money" is out...gotta go get it...

Peace

Welcome to the hunt. I used packing peanuts for my dummy. Theres a huntorial I did on it. Check it out.

The Rubies mask comes with a flimsy plastic vacuum-formed bio....and after being squeezed into a platic bag and a box it's a little distorted.
Plus, it's a little off in shape anyway. So I am going to duplicate it in pourable sculpting clay and reshape it, then recast in a lightweight resin or something.

Here is the creating of the negative from the existing bio (letting the plaster backing settle)

Here is the Mr. Incredible suit that will be latexed once I get the duct tape dummy finished (try to do that this weekend.) The latex pigments will be here Monday or Tuesday so I can tint the latex and get rolling on that part too.

The wonderful Rubies mask itself here. Trying to decide the best way to upgrade it. I might cut the face part out and shape the rest to look right when the bio is on. Got some backer rod that I need to taper and paint. The need to root around for some dread rings then.

I thought about recasting it in clay also to give a quicker start on something better. I really need to find 2 people here in Austin that could help me make a casting of my head so I could sculpt directly on it. (I have a small quantity of Plat-Sil Gel-10 to play with other makeup ideas too so a cast of my face/head would get a lot of use...)

I'll update again once I make the clay bio (or screw it up...all new to me so I know I'm gonna botch something)

Roninpred is in San Marcos and I'm in Houston. Thats the best shot I can give you on the location help.

Making some progress on this suit...I haven't used an airbrush in probably 15 years so I gotta cut myself a little slack. Big difference between painting a car and airbrushing a latex suit.

Here is the Mr. Incredible suit latexed (mostly...lower leg still to do)

Here is the paint progress so far...what do you guys think of the coloring/pattern?
It's kinda random spots and stuff, nowhere near the quality I have seen on many of the suits here but I'm also rushing to get done.

The Mr. I suit stitching is a touch off center too, so that throws me off a little. The next version will be a true sculpted suit once I get a lifecast of myself (after I drop 20-30 lbs off the middle).

Here is the bio I got from Seahunterr...the undermask should be here on Monday.

I'm making the plaster cast for the dreads either tonight or tomorrow.

Why I waited until the beginning of October to begin a project of this size I'll never know...sheesh!

If any of you have suggestions I'd love to hear them...so many of you are amazing sculptors and painters.

Thanks!

Looks good so far! LOL.....you waited until October to start your pred suit?!!??! All I can say is...good luck to you! I'm sure you'll make it, but its going to be painfull I bet!!!! I'm stressed out already and I have been working on it for months!!!!

Hey man, looking GREAT! I'm about to latex my Mr.I suit up. Any pointers? Did you use paint brush to get the latex on, rollers, or airbrush?

Cheers!

Thanks! I appreciate the positive comments.

I used a brush for most of it...I started off trying to spray it, but even the light overspray was getting on everything. I do not have a shop area...I'm doing all this in my apartment so I'm a bit more limited in capacity.

The brush left streaks in it and I couldn't seem to avoid it. I used a roller for some sections which gave an interesting texture, but just ended up finishing with the brush. I'm sure there is a better and easier way, but this was my first try.

One of the hardest things to deal with when doing the suit was latex sticking to itself. any areas that folded over would stick, both on the inside and outside. The mannequin I was using at first was standing with the arms down to the side and feet closer together. I ended up taking it off that and stuffing it with anything I could find to place it in a "spread eagle" form so I could get to the armpits and crotch areas without everything sticking together so bad.

The suit is baggy on me in certain areas but since I am working by myself I couldn't take up the slack. If I knew someone who could sew, I would have had them fold the areas with slack up in the back or inside of the legs and then stitch it up. Once the latex was on you wouldn't really see the work.

I've only live in Austin since January so nobody I know does sewing. :)

Good luck on your suit

Looks greats so far, holding out to see the suit on pictures.

Thanks TMI...I've been really blown away by the quality of your paint work. Once I get this project past the Halloween stage and can slow down I really want to take some time with the airbrush and get better control.

I got the undermask from Seahunterr yesterday and got a chance to paint it up with the reddish-black color scheme I'm using.

Let me know what you guys think.

This was after the base color and the brown

After the black spots...ready for a clear coat and then the dreads. Gotta get some magnets for the bio also.

Um wow I thought I would never see someone cut the face out of a DB P1 in my life but you took that leap, lol. But seriously everthing looks to bo going good so far, will be waiting for more.

It had some casting imperfections in that area so I got it at a really good price...
Since this is mainly for a Halloween party I can pop the bio off and talk to people (and eat/drink).

When time and $$ permit (and my painting skill is better) I'm sure I'll upgrade to a full mask.

Started adding dreads after clearing the mask....till I ran out of super glue.

gonna try and finish the dreads tomorrow night. I just shaped 3 basic dread rings and cast some in resin...I think they may be a little thick. I need to mold and cast some better ones...more like the P1 rings.

I cut a series of small wedges out of the dreads near the mount point and glued them in a bit of a curve so they would turn downward easier.

Opinions and criticism welcome.
