Rick Deckard Blade Runner 1982 - Soup to Nuts!

Hey all,

This project has been a long time coming!

Generally, I make mostly Star Wars related costumes, but I was contacted by (I think) a fellow member, Mark Dubeau, about making Deckard's trench coat.

I wasn't in a good living space at the time (actually pretty unsafe but that's another story) so we held off for a bit.

That ended up being a good choice, because my skills, ability to dedicate time to the project, and equipment really improved.

We had some points on his current jacket that he wanted to improve on (collar, material, pockets, etc) but was very happy with the overall dimensions.

Using the coat he had lent to me, I used the masking tape method to pull the basic patterning and modified upon that.

I am creating some YouTube videos about the project (so far I only have the introduction done) but the project has really snowballed from just the trench coat.

I decided that I really wanted to create the costume soup to nuts. Trousers, holster, trousers, belt, blazer, shirts, ties...everything except the adidas.

I spent a considerable amount of time creating illustrator files for two shirts (the most well known shirt) and the diamond patterned shirt from the end of the movie.

There are a few options for the geometric tie as well, but being difficult, I designed my own version as well.

Now for the shoes, I found a variant of the Stan Smiths that were a great deal ($40 shipped) that didn't require any covering or removing of logos. Amazingly, I had some brown shoe laces from my Wested Indy boots that fit perfectly.

For the blaster, Adam at Watney Props printed me a great print of the Anders blaster.

I created a file in illustrator for the holster as well.

As I continue the project, I will post more in-depth on each piece.

Figured I would start the thread with a smattering of pics to get the attention of anyone who might be interested.

you can check out my YouTube channel for some more info on the jacket project, and the methods I used to finish my blaster.

Thank you guys! Looking forward to starting the second version of the trench!

In the meantime, I started the mock up of the blazer.

this is the first blazer I am attempting to sew, so I opted to not connect the back yoke to the sleeves as it was just gonna be too much measuring for my attention span while I was altering the pattern.

Happy so far - it is coming out fairly clean.

Very happy with the contrast between the herringbone and the trench coat

Thank you! The one pictured is the mock up I made - so there are a few things I want to refine. Should be starting the next version soon!
If that’s a mock up I can’t wait to see what your final work will be like!

I have a question for you Chickenheads regarding the blazers!

It looks like at least two different designs were made for the film using what I presume to be the same herringbone fabric.

One blazer has one shoulde patch, darted front panels, higher front panels, and the notched lapel runs lower (maybe due to the back yoke)
The other has two shoulder patches, no front darks, higher notched lapel, etc.

Do you know if one was made for the "suit" with the matching trousers and the other was a blazer/sportcoat to be worn with different trousers?

My mock up is a bit of both as it stands. At this point it is a bit late to remove the darts as they run under the patch pockets. Which I am "okay" with as this is a mock up, and I had already planned to redo them. But you all know the pain of knowing something isn't right that could have been avoided, hah!

This is the one he wears in the film:

I just checked the blue ray. At least in the one scene you can see it.

There are only three scenes where he is shown in just the blazer, I think.

The first is the scene where Bryant is showing him the files but you can't tell.

The second is where you briefly see it and you can see it's the jacket above. It's when he starts to ask Rachael about the Brother Doctor story. He takes of the trench and you can clearly see it before he takes the blazer off.

The third is in the bathroom after Leon kicks his but. It is shown briefly as he takes it off. You can't see but it does have a straight line across the back mid shoulders which would look odd if both side fronts did not have the layer thing.

Hope this helps.

Well, what started as "I'll just put the sleeves in today" ended up being finishing the mock up.

overall pretty happy!

it is buggy lined, with some toggle buttons.

a few things I will change on the next one will be 1) collar shape 2) bringing up the shoulder pad about 1 inch 3) bringing breast pocket up about 1 inch 4) connecting the back yoke to the sleeves.

but it'll do for now!

Really cool.

Could be my eyes, I watched the clip and thought I saw something that varies from your mockup. It looked to me that the shoulder patches have the herringbone running horizontally, not vertically.

Good catch! Ill have to check that out!

Good work so far, but I believe that the 2 front patches you have on the jacket are not "ribbed". It's just that the original had no lining and the fabric had a tendency to fall and fold in such fashion (no pun intended) that you'd think that those patches were the way you've sewn them onto the front.

This is also a good catch!

I was a little thrown off looking between what seems to be a prototype, and then what was screen used. To my eyes, the prototype looks like it has ribbing - but the screen used doesn't.

I also may tear out the collar and fix the angle a bit as that is really bugging me.
