Rey - Star Wars: The Force Awakens Build (open for everyone!)

Galacticat - I am SUPER impressed at your dye samples. I'm glad to see I'm not the only super organized, perfectionist out there! XD (I didn't do it for this project, but I've done it for others).

Kristen Jones - :love

Thanks for the suggestions - we're really hoping to print ours as we have a printer and it would be more satisfying that way. Might start with Delphius's staff on Thingiverse, but I think I agree that 1" would be better, and there seem to be other tweaks we'd want to make. I can't ever seem to just print whatever someone else posts, I always seem to find things to mess with :)

I used Delphius's staff on Thingiverse and am very happy with the results. I scaled it down to fit 5/8" wooden dowel to make a smaller version for my 5 year old daughter.

Looks good, thanks for the info! I'm probably going to use that and go with a 1 1/8" dowel. How long is the nominal normal staff?

Thanks for the complements. Not sure how long the normal staff is but I do plan on making one once I'm finished both my son and daughter's scaled down props.

Lady Nerd - looking great! Bummed I missed Dragon Con this year. Maybe we'll run into each other next year.

Kresty - I have Jonathan's staff. It is fantastic. Can't speak to the files.

Galacticat - I am overwhelmed at the fabulousness of your dye samples.

Just running in and out to say hello. Hope everyone is well. Also, I agree. #ReyItForward is a fabulous hashtag. I somehow missed this.

Such a thorough analysis. Are you going to post details from your lab notebook so fools can replicate your experiment?

And so it begins... Finally. This is how I spent the past several hours. So. Much. Taupe.

I'm getting close! I'm mainly torn on which fabric to use for the wrap. I know a lot of people have used the viscose from Dharma, but it seems so stiff to me, and has basically no texture. The JoAnn crinkle cotton isn't super accurate, but I like the drape a lot more. I considered ordering the crinkle viscose from the UK eBay seller but I've put so much damn money into this costume already... and still need to get a belt, too. :unsure

Lol. Sad thing is, I don't keep track of water-to-dye ratios, so once I finally get to dyeing my real fabric, I just kind of guesstimate. This is what I ended up with, after about 12 hours of dyeing, washing, drying...

ZHflASyl.jpg

The shirt fabric (hemp cotton jersey knit) came out great! Dharma no longer sells the natural color, so I had to start with the white. I used a very diluted dyebath with RIT Taupe.

I think the headwrap fabric (heavy gauze from JoAnn / Cosplay by Yaya Han) is all right, though I could go darker on it. I'll probably keep it as is and just weather it a ton. I threw it into the same diluted Taupe.

The pants fabric is stone wash crepe de chine from Dharma. I used a 50/50 mix of RIT Taupe and Pearl Grey. I mostly like the color but think I might try adding a bit of green to them.

The wrap dress fabric seems too grey to me, but it matches a lot of reference photos, and I know it'll photograph lighter, anyway. This is the JoAnn crinkle cotton, but I'm not positive which color it is, as it's been in my stash for a while - it's darker than their current Papyrus but lighter than the Natural. I threw it into diluted Taupe, but after it dried thought it wasn't grey enough, so I threw it into the leftover pants dyebath (Taupe + Pearl Grey) very briefly.

Interestingly, I did try using some of Dharma's reactive dyes, and 50/50 Safari Grey + Ecru is super close in color to RIT Taupe. Which is why I ended up using RIT instead of all the fancy dyes I'd just purchased. :p

Now it's time to get to sewing! I'm planning on using the McCall's Rey pattern as a base and modding it for accuracy.

UPDATE:

Added a bit of RIT Apple Green to the pants fabric. They're a bit light, which should be fixed with weathering, but I'm happy with the color! :D

Wow, this thread is a bit huge :) I'm looking at the staff and was wondering what a good source for stls for 3D printing would be? I've seen references to a 1" dowel as a base, but some of the files look more like 1 1/8". Suggestions?

Here's a set as well:

Current wisdom is your height + 6"

It's worth the money, believe me.

I tried the cotton crepe too and it doesn't drape right at all compared to the crinkle viscose. It may be a bit of an expense, but it will have *the* right look and flow when you get it, and you'll be glad that you didn't skimp on something that really must have *that* look.

sigh. Okay. Ordered. :rolleyes

Also ordered a belt from Leather Clad Legends, and a wig from WigisFashion, so between waiting on those and the wrap fabric, sewing things, and putting the staff together, I might be able to have her done by the end of the month...

I met a Rey cosplayer at a local con this spring, and she had used the dharma stonewashed silk along with the sand dune acid dye, and the color was spot on! So sand dune is what I plan to try, and I will post pics as soon as I finish my samples.

You've inspired me to start the dying process, Galacticat!

And I will definitely do a light taupe dye-bath for the shirt after seeing your color! Only problem is that I forgot about the dye and made the shirt first, lol. We'll see how well that turns out. Hopefully fine.
ity pics than the ones I've been posting recently.

Ok! Pics of my almost finished shirt! Please don't look at the sides, I cut the shirt a little wide in case of mistakes, and I'm now in the process of taking it in.
The neck and henley are as screen accurate as I could get. I used screenshots from starwarsscreenshots.com specifically ones from the scene where she's going to see unkar the morning after finding bb-8, and shots from when she and finn are hiding from the troopers in the tent. Those ones were really useful, as her wrap dress wasn't covering any of the henley part in those shots.

I've read all 123 pages of this thread... holy crap you guys are talented. I'm making this costume for Halloween and it'll be nowhere near all the rebel legion costumes in here, but I'm excited to get started! I think I am going to go with the JoAnn fabric because if time/$ constraints. If there are any lurkers in here like me, these pants look pretty similar to Rey's, and maybe only require a dye job. I know she doesn't have pockets and they aren't exact, but I really like them!

I got my PoZu boots yesterday!

If anyone needs a size 40, I'm gonna resell them. I ordered I size 41 to replace them, as the 40s are pretty snug for me.

Worn once, drop me a message. Thought I'd post here before resorting to the greater facebook masses!

I wish! I wear a men's 13 tho :/

Edit: For those of you who have finished the full scavenger, where did you find the rug for the shoulder pad? I haven't found a good one yet, so advice would be welcome!!!
Also...
I did dye tests tonight for my headwrap. I want to do a couple more tomorrow, and I think I'll dye the headwrap fabric tomorrow as well. So far what looks good to me is a light RIT taupe bath with a little pearl grey.

I used this rug from Dollar General:

Cut to shape, and paint with Taupe and Sand Coloured spray paints and assemble.

I did trim off a good deal of the "fringe" after I'd taken this photo.

I'd be done with my pants, but instead I've been agonizing over how to do the damn leg wraps that she never even wears down... :facepalm This is such a dumb thing to obsess over, but it's bugging me!

There may be more info on this in the thread, but I don't remember seeing much about the wraps and couldn't find much doing a quick search. So after talking this through with a fellow Rey, this is what we've figured out. There seem to be THREE wraps on each leg. My cuff is 6" wide, folded in half to 3", and it's got a 15" extension (which may need to be shortened) - I was planning on splitting this extension down the middle so there are two 3" wide strips. Then, the third strip will be sewn onto the other side of the cuff, but only at the edges, so that it forms a loop for the other two wraps to go through.

cvDeQOxl.jpg

msxhqBol.jpg

We're pretty sure this is how they work, though what has us baffled is how the loop side of the 3rd strip is finished - there doesn't seem to be any kind of stitching, but it's not a raw edge, either. Nor do we think the fabric is folded, because that'd make the 3rd strip way too thick compared to the other two.

2QSkUYYl.jpg

It's such a minor detail, I know. We're crazy. I may just end up topstitching it - it's not like anyone is actually going to notice it, and I'll probably wear the wraps up 99% of the time anyway.
