Rey - Star Wars: The Force Awakens Build (open for everyone!)

Thanks!

The greeblies all came from my RPF Angel.

As for the stitching...believe it or not I did it all with my little HuskyStar sewing machine. :cool

I had originally considered this Messenger Bag kit-bash to be a temporary solution. But now that it's done, it's solid! I think I'll be happy as-is without making a costly trip to Tandy Leather to make a "better" one. :thumbsup
What does my RPF Angel mean? Like a secret? Or someone in particular?

Really loving this thread, I love Angels they are Great, I will be firing up a vac table I have a lot to make on another thread Batmobile But I'm making plugs for the lens so I have to find the rite clear green plastic to form these I think they make a dark green from my research so this may save a bunch of storm troopers from losing there eyes and you can keep your mask for your collection. will keep a update on this......Keep it up guys... Thanks.....Jim

Scaling something based on a photo and having actual dimensions are two different things. An exact number and a guess. If you like working with guesses by all means go ahead. But I'd much rather have actual numbers. The Fett jetpack is a case of this. Perspective changes dimensions of things and yes you can get close to what the scale is using something known. But even with a ruler next to the object or an object it's prefect. I'm hardly new to any of this nor am I asking for anyone's first born. I didn't think it would be a lot of trouble to help out the community. I'm sorry if it was rude to ask for assistance.

You guys really need to learn how to scale things out yourselves.
It's really easy.

I'm well aware of how to scale from photos... the dimensions of the pieces of our F-11D (which was modeled and built in summer of last year, long before there was the wealth of reference photos there are now) are only off from the actual screen-used props by 1-3mm at most (confirmed with calipers used on a production blaster).

Regardless of whether Kristen is willing to help me out with measurements, I will be creating this set. But I don't see much of a reason to spend an hour and half trying to guesstimate the dimensions and circumferences of all of those greebles, accounting for perspective and shooting angle, etc, if I can just get Kristen to quickly take a couple of measurements of her pre-existing set in about ten minutes, which I can then quickly confirm. Time is money, etc.

Side note, things that are easy for you (multiplication, division, estimation of size and scale, etc) may not be easy for everyone else. For some people, writing term papers comes easily; for others, it's like having teeth pulled.

In the case of Star Wars, you are quite correct. Since most of the props in TFA are kit bashed, once you identify a given known item and determine it's size, you can use that to approximate scale of the things in the photograph next to it. :thumbsup

However, we each have our unique abilities and limitations. I like to try my hand at just about everything...but I also am VERY grateful when someone gives me a helping hand. :)

Well there we have it then...and I stand corrected. :thumbsup
also, my apologies to @T5H... I sincerely did not mean to offend, and now that I know how you've contributed you have my undying gratitude. :)
No offense done. Looking back at it, if you weren't aware that I did the 3D design for JJ's staff, my post didn't make any sense indeed!

Long story short, I designed the staff for my sister-in-law, and rather than leaving it sit on my computer after we printed it I offered the files to JJ as I knew he'd be interested, and I was seeing a lot of Reys desperate for a good staff ;).

Shoulder pad is DONE!

I went on a scouting mission last night after work and came up with something workable:

it's not 100% the right weave, but it's close enough for the troop I have coming up this Saturday. At least it's really easy to make, so if I find something closer later on I can just remake it.

I also finished adding greeblies to the pack, and did the weathering:

I used rubbing alcohol to take the shine off the leather, then drybrushed it with black and taupe spray paints, and finally dusted it with textured sand spray paint.

Dirty. Good. :p

Thanks! It was super simple, really. I bought a cheap rug from Dollar general, cut a roughly oval shape from it, sewed it to a canvas backing, and tossed it into the wash.

Once it came out frayed, I spray painted it with a combination of Taupe and Textured rust coloured paints to give it the right gritty look.
