Rey - Star Wars: The Force Awakens Build (open for everyone!)

Here's a look at the head wrap shirt laid out:

As you can see I extended the arms...ALOT. But the shirt is 100% wearable.

Head wrap construction complete!
I still need to dye it, but the hard part is done.
on your goggle clips, did you just glue those to the goggles? or are they also held on with the 2 twine pieces in the middle of them? I'm working on mine now.

....and did you decide on a light yet?

Looks great!
Any chance you can put alittle video together?

A video of wrapping it on my head?

I do plan to try that tonight, after it's dyed. It is very simple, though:

First you put the shirt over your head and poke your face out of the neck hole. Then pull the body of the shirt down around your shoulders and arrange it so it covers your shoulders and bust, like Rey's did. It's good to fuss a bit with the "neck" area, kind of pull the fabric down and make sure you won't end up with a Turkey Gobbler under your chin. LOL

Then take both arms and cross them behind your head, twisting the arms as you do. Then bring each arm forward, sort of inter weaving them with the piece from before when you wrapped them behind your head (think "Crown of Thorns") and then just keep wrapping them around till they come back to the rear again. then you can just tuck the loose ends into the wrappings in back.

I found it helpful once I had the whole thing on to sew a small stitch on each side of my head, to hold the "bottom" of the "face mask" portion tightly so that when I put it over my nose and mouth it gives a sort of ninja mask look to it, and holds tightly. But the material is sooo stretchy, so it's easy to pull it down under your chin. You see Rey do this once right in the beginning of the film...you can tell there is stretch to it. Initially I'd thought there was elastic, but there really is no need.

I'll do the video demo later tonight, and will show this feature as well.

I assume its like the "tshirt ninja" thing Ive seen done...

You put the opening of the head where your eyes go and kinda drape the shirt over your chest and back...then tie the arms around your head?

Yes! You've got it exactly!

I tied them to the goggles with the twine you can see going through them. I have since come across something that I think will look more screen accurate than these, so I'll be removing them and replacing them.

The toggle bolts look pretty good...but I think I chose too big of a size, and they look out of scale to me. I noticed the other night that the little plastic orange tool that Lego sends you with their kits for prying bricks apart is just about perfect if you cut off the prying end. the size and shape is almost dead on! I'll take a picture once I've got them made.

I haven't chosen a light yet. All of this time I've been looking only at the C7 display, which shows the simple cast resin stunt light. Only a day or two ago I saw the D23 display (way behind times, I know) and see that there is much more detail to the light...the two look markedly different.

I have a friend who has something that might work, but if that doesn't come for a while I may just take the mini LED keychain flashlight that I bought at Menard's and put it inside a Chap Stick tube and add the details to make it look like the C7 display for now.

Such a small part to have me so stumped. :p

I can't wait for my Amazon messenger Bag to show up...! I am ITCHING to start on the backpack.

I also found another seller that has the Crinkle Viscose for the wrap dress. Not in the Sandstorm colour.. this is white, but otherwise the same:

They have 8 meters left. I bought four, but will probably have extra. get it while you can!

For the people who used wooden dowels to make their staff and made it so that it it able to be dismantled, how did you do it? I remember someone saying they used a threaded rod but how? I can't seem to figure it out..

Well, I dyed the head wrap:

I still think I need to drab the colour down a bit...seems too "warm". i might try over dye-ing with taupe.
i think it looks great. It's hard to get the colors on everything to flow together. I did the wrap dress and thought it was good initially, now im thinking it is a little too dark, so i may redo it down the line.

I bought two 3' sections of 1" dowel rod at Lowes, and while there I went to the hardware section and got two of the threaded inserts that they sell for replacement furniture legs, and a section of matching threaded rod.

I drilled an appropriate sized hole in one end of each of the dowels, tapped the threaded inserts into the holes, and then measured the depth of both holes, added that together and cut off a section of the threaded rod that length and threaded it into one of the ends, then just put the other end on and screwed it down till they met tightly.

Quick, easy, done. :thumbsup

So did you make the shirt completely from scratch or just modified the sleeves?

yes... completely from scratch. I just wanted more sleeve length after I'd made it, so I tacked on more. LOL

Oh no!!! What about putting the arm sleeves on (your arms), and slowly wrapping while hot gluing (on med, not high!) The hot glue would easily melt into the fabric and hold it. If you use it sparingly, you don't see it ooze through? Just a thought. Hot glue is the shiz.

The E6000 stuck to the mannequin arm. :facepalm

Thought I'd share an update on the lobster claw rifle strap clips.

I purchased these off eBay (Item # 121879333340):

I then sandblasted the shiny new coating off and used patina to muck them up and give them that old rusty weathered look:

(You can also see the D rings that I blasted and put in a small zip lock bag with a bit of water to rust them up nicely).

Finished look with the WWII rifle strap I also got off eBay:

Lol, When i saw the first post of you gluing it with E6000, i was wondering what you used under the wraps so that they would not get stuck to the arms.

Can't you just sew the wraps together with string or over some skin colored pantyhose that you cut apart.

Those are also available at Jo Ann... bought some a week or two ago. If anyone needs a set, I have an extra pair that you can have.

The finish looks good!

Another thing that works well is that textured paint you can buy at Lowe's. I used the brown on my toggle clamps for the goggles and it looks super rusty crusty. It sprays out almost like sand granules and builds up a texture very easily.

The problem is that it needs to be fitted to my arms. It can't be done flat, and it's not easy (or adviseable) to sew it while on my arm.

Thant was the problem with using the mannequin arm... once I got them off they were stretched too big for my arms and looked baggy.

It honestly isn't a big deal to wrap them over the compression sleeves, and it gives the best look overall. I just tuck the loose ends into the compression sleeves when done and it holds fine.

Wrap it around your arm and have a friend put some needles on it so it stays on. Then take it out with the needles still on and sew around it.

Hello everyone. I work with leather so I have a lot of scrap that I would love to make use of. I was thinking I would make some straps for Rey's staff like the ones in the photo below.

For anyone that has a staff, may I ask what the dimension is around your staff in the place where the straps attach? I have the leather and the snaps etc., but just need to know how long to make them.

Thanks :)
