Hi all,
Been following this one from first word.
Havent posted since the first few pages, but I've been right here with you guys.... Err gals.
Need some help.
Patterns for the belt and wrist piece.
Also, anyone here in the states have some left over leather for those 2 pieces?
Ive been striking out finding any locally.
Let me know if we can make something happen.
Thanks everyone for all that's been contributed to this thread.
Im blown away by everyone's progress.

You will probably have to alter the lengths to fit your figure.

I see you're in the BA.
There should be Tandy stores near by as well as a leather shop in Oakland.

Just wanted to pop in and say thanks again to EVERYONE who has contributed to this thread over the months, because all of that research, suggestions, sourcing and details...this just in today!!! :-D (I'm not stoked, and definitely not careening around in little circles making weird noises). Nope.

You guys rock!

Very awesome, congrats!!!!

I'm also aiming for RL :) How long did it take for the approval to come back?

Overall, about a month and a half. I was asked to make a couple changes, so they'll give you great feedback, and then plenty of time to comply. It's a really smooth process, but it does take a while. My liason also mentioned that they had a LOT of Rey's on the table, so understandably, the wait time was longer. The initial estimate for first review was 10-14 days. But it's worth the wait. :)

Unless you want in on the occasional group event I'd say do your own thing and not bother with the RL/501st.
They usually want something really stupid for you to "qualify".

Being one of the early founding members I walked away from all that nonsense.
I was signed up with the 501st when there was only less than 10 members and it was just a a registry for Imperial costumes, founding member of the Golden Gate Garrison and Endor Base. (TK-305, Rogue 9)
I also designed their patches.

I just figured I was making the costume, might as well go for RL. My sister and I have always been in Star Wars related groups (NY Jedi, Saber Guild, etc.) So we know a few people in a bunch of the different costuming groups. Just another fun thing to do and reason to wear it outside of cons :)

I'm kind of curious, does the whole costume have to be homemade for the RL/501st or just most of it? I was thinking of applying because, why not, but my pants, staff and boots are all going to be bought. Just wondering.

How many metres of it do you think would be needed?

If you want the wrap dress to be one continuous piece it would be around 5 meters. However if you're going to add the splice (which is movie accurate) then probably only about 2.5 or 3 meters. It will depend on your height a little bit too.

It'd be best to get some scrap fabric and a tape measure and check yourself how much you'd need.

It just needs to be accurate and yes, I'm sure there's a percentage that should be made but I don't know it, since mine was all homemade. They were much less strict than most of the posts here. I'm very excited to finally be a part of the RL, especially since I already spend so much time with them, and really enjoy all of the charity events they attend, and giving back to the community, sick children, and fans at large events. To each their own, I guess. Personally, I'm very proud to be an official member of Bespin Base/ Georgia Garrison now, and looking forward to being able to do formal events and not just informal, with the very active membership here. That may not be for some people, though.

ATLGurl9225, what changes were you asked to make? I am going for as movie-accurate as possible, but haven't heard what accessories are needed for RL approval.
I have the full basic outfit, head piece, staff, bracer, belt, boots, hip pack, but no goggles or gloves yet. This forum has been an invaluable resource (especially Division6!)
thanks for any advice on minimum approval needs!

I'm trying for RL this time, too. Been planning to for ages with other costumes, but then fell off the wagon. Going to go for it with Rey. I'm Kessel base, and why not?

My first version was "too grey" and the bag was not accurate enough. The overall palette was a requested tan. The goggles were too shiny (leather) so I covered them with suede and roughed them up. The weathering was an important part of it, as my understanding is that it should look like she's on a desert planet. As far as I can tell from other RL member cards, the required pieces are dress, belt, pants, arm wraps, boots, bag, and staff. The cowl and goggles appear to be optional, as most I see don't have them. If you already have them, though, they do judge whatever you submit in your pictures. I'm not sure if there is a costume standard written yet, but ill look.

I thought I'd share my progress on making the goggles. I have a background in stained glass and soldering, so I thought it would be pretty easy to make the goggle side clips out of copper sheet and copper tubing. (Easily available at the hardware store). Copper doesn't require as much heat as other metals and is therefore easy to solder. It's also easy to bend and manipulate.

Once the copper is soldered (or tinned), you can easily apply patina's to create the desired color or effect. (In this case, darker and weathered/rough.

I still need to drill holes for the thread, and may still apply some additional weathering.

I'm not sure how many people are making the goggles and what they are using, but if there seemed to be an interest, I may make a few more with the left over copper I have.

Hope this helps spark some creative ideas. :)

Thanks, it is for my daughter and she is about 5'3" so 3 metres would probably be plenty, we are going for accuracy that is good to know re the splice. so I am in the process of making the prototype out of some poly I have here, but wanted to get the fabric ordered as soon as they have it back in stock. Thanks so much!
