Rey - Star Wars: The Force Awakens Build (open for everyone!)

Success! The first full set of parts is complete! I used a pair of 1" diameter, 3-ft long poplar dowels, joined via 1" ID, 16"-long PVC pipe to act as a coupler. The dowels are held in the coupling by a pair of screws.

My GF is at work, but here are some pics of the 6' staff with my 5'7" roommate. I just sort of threw the pieces onto the staff body so apologies if their placement isn't 100% screen-accurate!

That looks amazing!! Wow! Are you thinking you'll be able to do some low cost ones before the premiere? I'd love to have it! Although I think I'd need to be able to take it apart to have it in the theater :) Either way, very cool stuff.

Hello, I'm new in this forum and I would like to make the Rey costume for the 16th of December.
I know there isn't much time and it won't be a perfect costume but still I would like to give it a try.
The problem is that I'm still really unsure of the materials.
Can I use as a reference the picture on the 5th page of this thread( http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=237501&page=5&highlight=rey)? Of course I know I have to hurry up on bying the materials,as probably I'm gonna need to order them online (I live in Italy,at the border with France and couldn't find anything near my town.
I would very much appreciate any help

thank you in advance

Hope Lady Nerd doesn't mind.
I updated her drawings a little with the belt and rear and side wrap.

The staff parts are looking great!

Thanks! I didn't expect them to turn out so well on my little Taz 5...!

That's the best part about using a PVC coupler to join two smaller halves. All you need to do is carry a screwdriver somewhere in all of Rey's clothing/pouches and you can easily break the staff down into two manageable 3-ft portions for easier storage on the go... :)

I already sold that first kit, I'm printing up it's twin cousin as we speak! I think I can manage 2-3 of these a week from now till the premiere.

The arm wraps are a gauze (medical bandages)

Is this the same for the wraps on her staff handle?

I'm on board for one whenever you have a kit lying around! My Kylo's been building a budget one for me in time for the premiere, but if I can get this Rey Rebel approved (and I'm no longer broke), I might be interested in multiple staffs ;)

How has everyone been dying the viscose for the outer dress/tabbard/wrap thing? I've got it soaking in a black tea bath right now but, it's not looking like its going to be dark enough.

I used Lady Lexy's instructions.
Nothing fancy on my part. just mixed a heaping scoop of each color with a disposable spoon.

Took maybe 15 minutes of soak time.
Pink and purple powders turned blue when water was added, fabric dyed purple,(freaked out) rinsed and washed with Woolite and it dried the perfect light tan.
.
After many many many attempts, I have finally gotten my costume to dye an acceptable color! Here's what ended up working for me:

Dharma Ecru came out too pink, though my theory is that filtering the dye might have contributed to this, because the filter seemed to take out the green.

Dharma Safari Grey came out too green, even though I followed the instructions absolutely perfectly, down to the tenth of the gram.

But then I thought, if one is not green enough and the other is not pink enough, what happens if I mix the two? In a last-ditch effort, I overdyed my Safari Grey fabric with the Ecru dye, following the instructions perfectly except for the filtering. And AT LONG LAST, the costume is an acceptable if not fantastic color.

So what would I recommend if you're trying to dye white fabric from scratch?

1. Buy both Ecru and Safari Grey (they're only a few dollars each) + the Soda Ash fixer + some Dharma Dye Remover in case it doesn't come out right (it's a miracle potion and so much more effective than bleach).

2. WEIGH YOUR FABRIC and measure the dye in accordance with this chart: http://www.dharmatrading.com/techniques/fiber-reactive-dye-yields-estimator-tool.html

3a. If you want to do exactly what I did, follow the instructions to dye with Safari Grey, then overdye with Ecru, without filtering either.

3b. If you want to do what I might try next time, use Ecru first by itself and see if that works, and if not, then overdye with Safari Grey.

3c. If you want to take a shortcut, try using the recommended number of grams of dye, but use half Ecru and half Safari Grey in the same batch.

Other than filtering, follow the instructions PERFECTLY:

I hope this is helpful! Here's the rest of my costume "recipe" so far:

Yeah, we were debating 37 or 38, we measured and her foot came out to be exactly at the limit of the 37s in mm. Not wanting them to end up too tight she ordered up. They're not unwearable or anything, just loose.

Wow this thread is amazing!!! Today I will order the boots they are pricey but they are so movie accurate and cute that they are worth the price.

Yesterday at a Chinese store I found pants that would do the trick. They are the right type and just need some tailorings.
I found as well two pashmina long scarves that could work for the vest (probably I'm gonna need another two to make it longer and nicer).

For the arms, I'm having an hard time finding the cotton gauze pattern and I was wondering if I used a long gauze from a pharmacy store and dye it? Do you think that would work
fine?

For the staff and belt my husband is offering on making those :)))

unfortunately i forgot the staff at work, but here is a first test if everything fits:

shoes are dark brown, not the po-zu´s. looking almost too good, too new...:wacko

By the way; with flash the clothings do look much brighter than they really are.
