Rey - Star Wars: The Force Awakens Build (open for everyone!)

Hey all - been following this thread from the shadows for quite a while, and am now starting my own build. Just wanted to say a huge (HUUUUUUUGE!) thankyou to all of you amazing people, for all the work you've put into contributing to this thread, and for the fantastic attention to detail that you've consistently displayed!

One thing I'm having a problem with, is sourcing bubble lenses for Rey's goggles. I've seen the link to the ebay seller that does them, but with shipping to my UK address and import charges, it's just waaaay too expensive for me (like $70+ total!). Has anyone found anywhere else to source them, or had any luck making them themselves?

Thanks again, and good luck and happy building to all the Reys-in-progress!

I will cut down the right side (like we do for the pouch) and trim down the flap. Save the excess leather for greeblie pouches and reuse the shoulder strap for the backpack straps.

It was 48.00 on amazon.

I like this idea very much! I've been all over eBay trying to find a cheap leather satchel to do exactly the same, but haven't found one big enough for the right price. This one looks great though, and it actually looks like the price is $35 - so I got it too.

I don't think so, actually. Division6 estimated about 14" in height and 11" in width. I think that's a bit too tall, actually. the canister on the bottom is about 3" in diameter, so that would make the whole thing about 17" tall.

This messenger bag is reported at 11" tall. I plan to shorten the flap, but will make it come up a bit higher before I do, to gain another inch or two. but even if I left it alone at 11", with the canister on the bottom that brings it to about 14" tall, which on my 5'7" framed back makes it go from my shoulder line all the way down to the small of my back...which looks about right to me.

On the C7 and D23 displays it appears to hang lower than the mannequin's lower back, but if you look the top of the pack is well below the shoulder line. I measured from the base of my spine and got 14" to the lower back. In reality it's likely that the pack will hang lower than this anyway, so a taller pack will look too big in that case. I'm the same height as Daisey (if the internet is to be believed) and I couldn't take one much longer without it looking too long.

This would work even better for shorter gals than I.

This whole "tee shirt" used for the head wrap, has me confused. The C7 and D23 displays clearly show the head wrap as a cotton gauze type of material. I'm wondering if the "tee shirt" was just used in the film because they were distance shots? ..and no one would notice?

Anyhoo, I thought I'd also share that I was in Zara last night and I bought an amazing beige scarf that appeared to be the right gauze type material (I'll snap a pic soon). I was also in Goodwill over the weekend and wanted to remind folks that you can find some AMAZING fabrics in the Goodwill too. ;) Old herringbone long wool coats that you could take apart and re purpose for the vest seen at the end of the film. :thumbsup

Looks like gauze, not a tee shirt:

It isn't gauze. it's a cotton hand woven fabric. It's a very loose weave, but when you wash it the fabric puffs out here and there, displays this texture that you see here. Notice that the patterns in the fabric are roughly square in shape, and that they intersect one another (woven) unlike the gauze which has a more bubbled texture to it.

I have several yards of it coming from Dharma within the week. Once I've washed it I'll post pictures for you.

I believe Division6 also used this fabric for the head wrap, Nes Pas?

Here's a pic of it washed, from Dharma's site:

Now granted the texture isn't as easy to make out here, as it isn't in such bright contrasting lighting as the D23 Display. But if you look closely you'll see that squareish texture is there.

This pic might actually show it better:

also, on either the C7 or the D23 (can't recall which ATM) the display dressers also wrapped long twisted strands of bubble gauze around the waist and even round the head of the mannequin, which were not seen onscreen. Not sure why they did this.. I guess they thought it looked better...but it isn't screen accurate.

Ah yes, "cotton woven fabric" ...not gauze, my bad. I need to get my fabric terms correct. ;) Thanks!

It may have been my fault as well, as I usually equate "gauze" with the "bubble gauze" fabric (jedi tunic fabric) that has that bubble like texture to it. I assumed that's what you meant, but perhaps it wasn't.

In any case, I do believe the Dharma Hand Woven is the closest looking thing to it... once you wash it. :p

-----UPDATE----

Actually, now that I've gone back and re-read your post, I see that I completely mistook what you were even saying... so it's COMPLETELY my mistake.

If I have it right now, the confusion on your part was with it being called a "t-shirt" (which I assume led you to believe it was meant to be made of a typical tee shirt fabric) when in face we can see that it isn't at all.

We have been calling it a t-shirt only so that it's understood the shape of the garment, not having a bearing on what it's made of. many were confused as to how it was actually structured, which is where the t shirt description came from. they were explaining (can't recall the source just now) that it was a long sleeved tee shirt type of garment, and that the idea from the costumer's standpoint was that this would be a shirt that Rey might put on at night when it's cold, but during the day is tied round her head for protection from Sun and Sand.

Hello!! I'm technically new here, but I've been following this thread for months now, looking for resources for my w.i.p. Rey.
I've been cosplaying for years now and this is my new project, started in early November. It took some time, but I eventually (and finally) finalized it last night.
Here are some pictures of how it turned out.

I really wanted to thank everyone who contributed, in any way, to this thread - it has been INCREDIBLY helpful.

Here is a shot of the distressed Lara costume I mentioned earlier:

Wow! You make a killer Lara, Kristen!

sounds like you have it all measured out. I'm looking forward to seeing some pictures of your finished backpack.
I'm not working on that piece yet, but I really like the idea to modify an existing leather bag.

Me too! I was going to scratch build it, but I figured I'd spend easily 2-3 times the Amazon price just in materials, and then I'd still have all of the work to do.

Since almost everything else seems to be kit-bashed, I figured it would go with the look of everything else if I do it with the backpack too.

So the tunic portion is more the bubble gauze, and the head wrap (AKA "tee shirt") is more a cotton hand woven fabric. This is making more sense now yes.

I literally thought it was a long sleeve cotton tee shirt everyone was talking about. haha :wacko

This is GREAT!

You are absolutely killin' it!
Mind sharing your method on the head Wrap?

Thanks guys, it really is wonderful to hear feedback from you. I really value others opinions at this point. I'm trying to get my RL approval and I'm terribly anxious.

As far as the headwrap goes... I know a lot of people here have mastered the "long-sleeved shirt" method, but I went with the old-fashioned way. I was lucky enough to make a couple of trips down to Egypt a few years back when I was a little girl and I remember people from the villages teaching us how to wrap a tuareg turban. I used that knowledge and tweaked it a bit in order to make it as similar as possible to the movie version.
First thing that you need is... a big piece of fabric. And when I say big I mean BIG. Mine is about 2 yards. And it's viscose, because you need something that's not slippery, something that stays in place once you wrap it. The downside of this method is that it's heavy. Like... very heavy. I can never wear it for longer than 20 minutes at a time, because it gets really uncomfortable. Good thing that I'm planning on wearing it only at times during con - I'm sticking with the no-headwrap/natural hair style.

It's hard to explain and it'd be probably best if I did a little video - just inbox me if you want it with your email address and I'll upload it on google drive and share the link with you.

Hit up RS propmasters on the lenses they make TKs in the UK. I know they do bubble lenses. They should be able to beat $70

I don't think you're allowed to post eBay links btw. Might want to double check...

For scaling out the pack and parts I used the Enfield sling on the side of the pack and the webbing on the flap as my rulers.
Both side and bottom cylinders are about 2" dia. not including the flanges.

The pack is somewhat compressed and molds over the bottom cylinder.

Ok the head wrap. Actually I am working on it at the moment.

I don’t like the idea of ordering fabric without having the chance of touching it and seeing it with my very eyes beforehand. So I went to buy some fabric in a local shop.
But looking for the right fabric in local specialty stores was rather disappointing. They all had nothing really suitable on stock. So I did what the original Star Wars VII costume designer did. In an interview he said that Rey’s head wrap actually is a jumper. So I changed plans and searched for a suitable jumper in clothes shops.

The choice was not as good as I expected but finally I found a workable jumper. The fabric is ok and it has already a used look. But the color is to dark and I need to find out, if I can bleach it sufficiently. If not I still will have a nice jumper to wear the normal way. This also applies in case I will find a suitable fabric in the future, of course. So there was no risk involved buying this possible item.

I tried on a lot of jumpers and developed a rather clear idea of the shape it should have. The neckline should be round and narrow, so that the wrap will automatically fit tightly around the face. The armholes should be narrow, tow and the sleeves rather long.

I was glad to be able to try on all those jumpers around my head in fitting rooms – blocked from view. It must have looked very odd. :lol

Here is the result so far without bleaching. To put the jumper on like this was very easy. With a bit of practice it’s a matter of 30 seconds.
