Resin M38 build progress + Picture request.

While I a. save up and b. find a real one I'm going to have to make the best resin M38 I can.

Here are pic's of my progress so far. After a lot of head scratching and searching for something to look like a lens I found the lens from a Jewellers Loupe to be the perfect size for the large lens. Still need to find something for the other end, any suggestions welcome.

So far I've cleaned up the cast, drilled out the scope and cut thin strips of Plasticard to hold the lens in place.

Image Request: If anyone with a real scope who can tell me or even better post pic's that show what color inside the scope should be it would be much appreicated. I've trawled every old post I could find and couldn't find any images that helped gave me an answer.

I've done some experiments on a test piece with regards to painting and achieving a realistic weatherd look and am very pleased with the results.

Updates soon.

Cheers Andy.

Andy,

Just replied to your PM. As fas as I can tell, the inside is just black. Probably flat black to cut down on reflections.

When I had done weathering on my resin scopes I just painted them black and then used an artist's antique gold acrylic paint. Put a bit on my finger and rubbed it on. It seemed to give a very realistic result.

As for the small lens, have you looked at microscopes? I bet the lens closest to the specimen would be close.

I think I once found a real replacement lens for the small eye piece. I will take a look around for it and if I find it, its yours.

Cheers adamata, if you find it let me know the diameter.

And thanks Sumatra, I was going to paint inside brass, glad I checked.

I've already painted this once but had to strip it back down after I decieded to drill it out and messed up the paintwork.
First time round I primed, then a coat of Plasticote brass, then gloss black. The black could be scratched of with my fingernail leaving very realistic looking chips, a light rubbing over with fine wire wool aged the gloss black and simulated wear down to brass on a few high spots. I had even ran white paint into the serial No.s, at this point it looked amazing. This is when I decided to drill it out. I masked it up to stop my hard work getting wrecked :lol, unfortunatly the tape pulled a load more black off when I removed it makin a real mess :cry

Funny enough the technique still looked really good, just far too battered for what i wanted. Unfortunatly in my frustration i dumped it straight in the stripper tub, so i don't have any photo's.

This time round I'll do some step by steps to share.

Cheers Andy.
