Limited Run Resin Cast Thermoptic Pistol - Ghost In The Shell - 2nd Run Interest List

First Run Full! (y)

On a recent trip back to New Zealand, I made some very interesting industry connections that have allowed us to offer this incredibly accurate Thermoptic Pistol, as used by Major played by Scarlet Johansen in the Weta produced Ghost In The Shell.

While I can't name names, etc, what I can tell you is that we have had access to some pretty incredible reference material, resulting in what we believe will be the most accurate replica available. Construction will utilise similar techniques used to create the original prop. The master will be 3D printed in New Zealand on a high-resolution SLA resin printer, then prepped for molding. Molding and casting will also be done in New Zealand by a professional prop maker, resulting in a mixture of clear and white resin parts. These castings will then be sent to my workshop in Canada where we will prep, paint and assemble the finished pistols, ready for shipping.

Our design work begun in August this year and here is our final design.

There are 3 changes that will be made by hand to the resin master...
- adjust front and rear sights
- create beveled edge on front of rail plate
- create more curve on the front of the grip shell (at the bottom of the grip)

We printed a test-kit from a slightly earlier version of the design on a standard PLA printer to ensure the parts will work for molding. We are very happy with how this test-kit turned out.

The pistols will have a working trigger, with a visible internal spring like the original prop.

The replica will have a removable mag, held in place with magnets.

The mag will be hollow with a sliding top panel. This is so we can ship the replicas with empty mags so buyers can add their own dummy rounds, eliminating the concerns of sending "ammunition" through customs. The hollow mag fits 9mm rounds which will diagonally stack in the mag, as they would in a real Glock 17. There will be a spring (or similar) in the bottom of the mag to securely hold the bullets in place.

When comparing our test-print to a real Glock 17, the dimensions are spot on. Our rear outer shell even fits perfectly over the Glock receiver.

Time frame:
Dec - final design signed off - Complete
Jan - resin master printed and molds made - Complete
Feb - Sept - casting
October - finishing work

As you can appreciate, while we feel confident with this timeline, factors outside of our control may cause us to have to adjust it to suit. We will of course keep everyone posted as things progress. Been around here long enough to understand the value of communication. ;)

Mine arrived safe and sound! Can't believe I've been checking this thread on and off for so many months and now the wait is over. Thanks again!

On a side note, apparently Glock makes transparent magazines. If a second run was done with this gun and the handle was modified to fit a real mag, that would solve the bullet stacking concern brought up previously in the thread (assuming putting a real mag in a prop gun doesn't violate any laws, etc).

For now, I took a foam earplug and cut it to make it an exaggerated cone and dropped it to the bottom of the clip with the tapered tip pointing to the back of the clip. (I don't see the earplug or really even the bottom bullet once the clip is inserted). Then I dropped the rounds in (I found slightly nose diving them bullet first helped). Then I held the clip upside down to get the rounds to tilt more at the angle I wanted while I held my thumb over the opening so they wouldn't fall out. I also shook the clip gently back and forth until I got the rounds to stagger left/right every other round. Finally, I slid the clip cover on which wedged the rounds into place. Not perfect, I'd like the rounds to be nose up a bit more. Funny how the top round does in fact point up more than the others. Initially, this bothered me until I realized that in some real magazines, the rounds do this when they get to the top. So for now, I am tired...going to bed. Maybe I will work on this more later. Curious to see what other people post here.

Received my package. Wow, what an amazing Prop of the thermoptic pistol, really fantastic work. True professional and a credit to the RPF community. Nice one, thank you.

How many bullets fit in the mag? I don't want to buy more than I need.

I have eight in mine. Kinda crazy considering a real Glock can hold double that if not more but at least this is less expensive to fill :) Depending on where you live and where you wanna take/display this item, real 9mm rounds that aren't fancy, for just plinking at the range, may be less expensive than dummy rounds.

It appears that the bullets were stacked in a cross-cross pattern in the magazine of the pistol on display in Japan. So I’m guessing that the bullets used in this version were slimmer than 9mm ammunition. Ten bullets are showing clearly, although there may be more in the bottom or top parts of the mag which are obscured.

The Glock pistols that I have used typically employ the double stack magazine shown in the middle of the attached picture. The Major's Thermoptic pistol seems to be a hybrid of a single stack and double stack magazine as shown in the far right of the attached picture. A 1.5 stack? I believe the Sig Sauer p365 magazine does something similar.

Here's my solution for the bullets. Take a piece of thin clear plastic and cut it to fit exactly inside the magazine. Then place on to graph paper to ensure horizontal alignment of the bullets. Epoxy the bullets on to the plastic at the rear so it will not be seen when inside the mag. When dry, slip the bullets in to mag and voila!
I actually made the plastic long enough to take the bullets right up in to the slide, but there is an internal piece of casting behind the trigger which prevents anything going higher than the top of the mag. Still looks great.

Great to hear it arrived safe and sound. I hope it met your expectations. :)

Thanks RbbyRbt, I appreciate your kind words. Hopefully it made the wait worthwhile. ;)
