I don't know where I've discussed this before, but I'll reiterate my thoughts on the matter.
There are two Resident Evil games that I rank amongst the best of the series. The best game overall is Resident Evil 4, the one you just played. It's got the best gameplay, an extremely non-repetative setting (Seriously, this game is long and the mechanics don't change yet it always feels fresh!), and the return of a character I had a mad crush on (Ada!!!). It also proved that the Resident Evil franchise can do more than just be about zombies. I will always hail it as one of the best games ever made, and it was made for the Nintendo Game Cube! And speaking of Zombies, THERE ARE NO ZOMBIES IN RE4!
If you liked playing RE4, you should consider getting a pre-owned Wii or Wii U and get the Wii edition of Resident Evil 4. Even after the release of the PC port that featured a mediocre HD retexture, the Wii Edition is still hailed by many to be the definitive version of the game. As was noted at the time when the PS2 version was compared to the Game Cube, it featured weaker graphics, textures and longer loading times. What it did provide was an added Ada Wong storyline "Separate Ways" and an added costume for Leon and Ashley. Since the Wii console was a more powerful system than both the Game Cube and the PS2, Capcom not only ported over all the PS2 add-ons, but also updated the add-on's graphics and textures to the level that the Game Cube version featured. And the Motion Controls with the Wiimote is a big game changer, allowing you to freely aim wherever you want with quick precision. You can pull off a lot of neat tricks that were very hard to do with analogue sticks.
But if you're looking for the best Resident Evil game that I feel perfectly encapsulates the best that the franchise has to offer, give Resident Evil 2 a spin. Even though this game features Leon and Ada, the two games couldn't be more different. It's got a terrific atmosphere, wonderful music, great creature designs and a replay mode that actually switches the story around. Seriously, the Leon/Claire A and B games are so unique that I have yet to see any other game made since copy this method of story telling. The only thing that stops it from being an incredible game like RE4 are the controls and graphics. It may feel and look a bit clunky, but it's totally playable. Capcom announced that they will be remaking it so fingers crossed that they do something really special with it.
And while I respect your thoughts on wanting something to sit back and relax to, I still think they should try a Resident Evil movie that does the games justice. You'll still have these six action-packed movies to fall back on, but I want to see someone really do something with the property. And believe me when I say that my idea of what I think a perfect Resident Evil movie would be like wouldn't be an oscar winner either.
