request for reference for non-prop build?

Lemme explain what I mean by that.

I work as a motion graphic and visual effect artist, and frequently need to replicate something seen in a movie, in virtual space. All the reference that is used for actually building the prop, is just as useful to me when I recreate it digitally.

Is this sort of material ok to ask for? Even though I will not be making a physical prop from it?

Things like reference photos, scans, screen shots, ect.
