Repainting Sankara Stone

Ok as I sit here with my fingers sore and bleeding from carving voodoo doll heads(thanks Allan:thumbsup) I've never really liked the paint job on my sankara stone and knowing I never be able to afford a clear cast copy. Why not paint one?

So I'm thinking over techniques to get a similar look on a solid stone.

And was wondering if you guys had any ideas or input on what im thinking of doing.

Use pieces of tin foil/leafing or silver paint to get a base coat, a seal coat of some clear varnish
Several Layers of Brown/gold/yellow paints using a sponge painting style with a plastic bag to get the mottled effect with clear varnish between layers and build up the look
Maybe a wash of gold paint at some point?

For the browns not sure if I should use an acrylic paint, or something glossy? I have plenty acrylic at home so it would make sense to use.

What do you think?

OK so I just jumped in and went for it.

So first the stone got a coat of gold leaf paint I had picked up from Michales to paint detail on my Grail cup

Then I layered several coats of burn umber, with wadded up paper towels
the orange/burnt umber mix was brushed on with a stiff brush
a mix of details added with black/brown - washes and solid
and gold leaf paint spots on top to replicate the flakes
I still need to get a good thick varnish coat on

Other prop stone makers have had to just choose between either translucent cast materials or settle for the painted version of the stones.

I don't think you can recreate a convincing translucent effect with opaque paints design to block light. In my opinion so much the effect is dependent on light being able to enter the material.

On a side note, we use varnishes at my job. I've seen what happens when large amounts dry up in a container. I always wondered what varnish poured into a glass with clear crystal or quartz chunks added would look like dried?

yea with acrylics it will never be translucent, but I wanted to try and replicate the look of the translucent stones. I was just thinking I could make it look better than a brown lump.

Just a simple question, but has the translucent stones ever been made an sold? I would love to have one of them.

At least two versions to my knowledge.

I have one from Azuma via Club Obi Wan, here's one of his images:

The picture does not quite do the thing justice though.

Here's the first run he did:

Right now on evil bay reelart sells the translucent stones either individually or as a 3 pack. I think it's $60 for an individual one. And in advance, if reelart is some "no-no" person here on the rpf, my apologies.
