Refinishing MR Solo ESB Blaster

I couldn't resist anymore and got a MR Solo Blaster. I got kind of fired up about this gun when it appeared that Snowtrooper Commander could also possibly use a similiar type of blaster. This one will be way too heavy to troop with, so I thought I'd try my hand at weathering it somewhat.

The thing I hated right off the bat was the flash supressor. It has been coated with gray paint! I want to see that aluminum! Sanding was proving to be slow going, so I decided to try some Klean-strip stain remover. I've used this stuff on resin kits and it melts paint away.

I tried a small area by spraying some into a paper towel and wiping. The paint melted right off. However, I was careless and got some on the scope and barrel and of course, the paint came off in those areas as well!
This gave me an idea. To get some natural weathering, I put some of this stuff on a toothpick and scrubbed the two areas in blue. The paint came off in seconds.

In hindsight, I should have removed the flash supressor first, but this is what I ended up with for stripping it:

If you use this stuff MAKE SURE you wear eye protection and gloves. My skin started burning where little flecks of the stuff got on my arm from the toothbrush! If foams up, so I scrubbed over the sink and then rinsed with water 2-3 times.

When I was finished, this is what I ended up with. I had already started the weathering process by scraping and sanding edges with a needle file and sandpaper. The gun is made of a metal that is way too shiny, so it will need to be dulled down in areas.

To get the supressor off, I just started drilling through the center cap with bigger and bigger bits until it spun freely and I could pull it out.

Then it was a matter of finding a 5/32 hex key and unscrewing the hex cap screw inside.

I don't know what I'll do next. The tendency is to over-weather and I don't want to do that. I sure wish I could figure out a way to remove the stupid graphic inside the scope.

It looks better already:thumbsup Pristine finishes are the only thing I don't like about the MR props....otherwise they're top notch. Considering the weathering on the MR Han LE and the new Boba Fett LE, it's probably a good thing they just made them pristine.

I'm about to embark on weathering a MR Han EE once it comes and I'm really anxious to live up to what Guy Cowen achieved...he really set the bar high with this gun.

The scope graphic is probably the only artistic liberty taken that I really like....it's a novelty thing that I think is just kind of "cool".....I thought about making a couple for my "M19" & "M40" scopes on the weapons I own.....

Keep the pics coming:cool

I fixed the boo boos by spraying with Krylon Ultra-Flat Black. This is a perfect match for the finish. I then sanded all metal areas. Being rougher in random areas and places that would show more wear. After that, a very light drybrushing of Testors Steel Enamel. That was then followed up with a drybrushing of Liquitex Burnt Umber.

The flash supressor was given a black glaze to start the weathering process. I did this by mixing up some black acrylic paint, a couple of drops of black ink, a bit of thinner, and some Liquitex Matte Gel Medium. I brushed this thick mixture all over the supressor and wiped with damp paper towels. This causes all the grooves to retain the black paint. For the smooth areas, I just randomly brushed and blotted with the paper towels.

The scratched brass areas on the scope were too shiny, so I dulled them down with the same black glaze.

Next I'll probably repaint the grips and further weather the flash supressor.

That looks great, man!

I hear you on the overweathering thing. It really doesn't seem like Han's blaster was very worn at all, which would make too much weathering look odd.

Thanks guys. Just stepping away for a while and coming back to this, I think I will step down some of the weathering I have done. I'm getting ready to prime and paint the grips and supressor.

Lookin great!

Got any pics of the front end of the suppressor?

Thanks everyone. I got in a big hurry to finish this thing up today, so here it is. I misted the front end of the supressor with black. I primed the grips and painted them a burnt sienna color. I then darkened them with a burnt umber wash. Black streaks simulating the grain in the wood were added by lightly drybrushing black with an old brush. I made sure to move the brush in the same direction and kept the moves random. I also stippled it a bit with the black. After sealing with Testors Flat, I gave them a black glaze to darken the grooves.

Looks real world used, not beat all to hades.

I think you achieved your goal! Looks perfect! :cool

NICE job! :)

I especially like the muzzle, but the rest of the gun looks great too! Worn, not abused, just like I think the blasters really looked. I *personally* would have gone a little darker on the brown grips, but that's just me...:angel

Thanks for showing!

Looks killer, but I´d redo the grips.
Even if you put much efforts in recreating the wood pattern, it still looks a bit too "painted". May I ask why you didn´t simply sanded and weathered the grips instead of completely repainting them?

Just my 2 cents ;)
