Red Skull mask - New year, new build

And it's out!

Pretty much all of the clay is still in the mold. I'll be cleaning that out for a while.

Nice, Im glad the mold came out this time, I molded mine last night. It came out pretty good, I dont know how to upload pictures, or else I would start my own thread. I cant wait for you to begin the casting. I was thinking about you (dont get weird ;-) when I was demolding, got scared, considering this is my first run at a type of mold like this!

Don't worry, I won't get weird.

Getting the core out of the mold was a serious pain in the ass. You can probably tell it broke in a couple of places as I was fighting with it. Luckily, it broke in places towards the bottom that are not critical. I'm just going to superglue it back together.

Been digging clay out. I found that soap and hot water does pretty well at cleaning out the last little bits. I got some Goo Gone too to really get it clean. If I'm lucky I may try my first casting next weekend. Fingers crossed.

Good.

See, thats why I was skeptical about doing my first mask as a multiple piece route. I think Im going to go the way of the noob, do it how I did it, work my way up to 2 piece slush casting molds, then do what youre doing. Im still not clear on the process of injecting the silicone, I cant wait for you to do it hahaha.

Thats cool, I got some mineral spirits that Im going to use, not much clay stuck to mine, so I might do a casting tonight if I have the time. Fingers crossed indeed.

I'm not doing an injection. I don't have the tools or know how. Plus my sculpt wouldn't have worked for one as i didnt build up the clay enough. I'm basically doing a slush cast. I figured I'd just try it and see if I get a usable mask out of it.

Nice. Still anxious to see how it goes. I made a mold using #1 pottery plaster, I have no idea how long it takes to dry lol.

First pull! Overall, I'm pleased. It needs some work though. It's really thin in some places and there are a couple of holes I need to fill in with some silicone or something.

I'm not ready to try stretching it over my giant melon yet. I need to lube up my head or something first. Not to mention cut the mouth open.

Looks awesome man! Thats what happened to mine too, a few holes I need to patch. Did you get regular dragon skin, or FX pro? Im going to try to make another sculpt, this time going with some slacker, and some flocking. This stuff is really tough, so I think it should be ok to slip over your melon. I have a huge one myself.

Thanks a lot.

Once I patch the holes I'll feel better about stretching the neck hole over my skin.

So I used both kinds. The detail coat I used Dragon Skin 10 slow. I wanted the extra pot life to get the color how I wanted it and paint the inside of the mold. Then my second coat was FX Pro with the shorter pot life.

I have a little of that left over that I can try to fill the little holes with.

Not sure how cutting open the eyes and mouth will go though.

Worst case, I can use the front part of my mold to make a facial prosthetic and the just paint the rest of my head red!

Just get a real sharp pair of scissors, thats what I did, it cuts really well actually. Thats pretty much what Im doing, just doing the facial part, then attaching it to a red hood, and slipping that over. Its a zippered lycra hood I got on ebay.

Gotcha. The FX pro is a helluva lot stretchier that I thought. I can see how you would worry though.

First test fit.

It's not perfect but I have to say for my first attempt at anything like this I'm pretty happy with it.

And because I couldn't resist, I threw on my leather trench coat and gun belt to get an impression of what a final product might look.

Need to trim the eyes a little more. Mouth isn't great but it will pass. There was some pooling in the forehead area the gives it kind of a bump that I think I'll just have to live with.

This is pretty cool. I really want to try making a full Thanos mask some day. It's on my to-do list.
