Red Dwarf - Kryten mask score

I just got this piece through the post and just had to share - I stumbled across this on eBay and managed to snag it at a great price (it was listed in the wrong category with a poor title). :cool

I'm pretty sure this is a made-for-production latex Kryten mask from either Series 7 or 8 (the head shape was slightly different here from previous episodes) of Red Dwarf (if it was actually used in production it would be ripped to pieces). About 10 of these were made for each episode (there were 8 episodes in each of series 7 and 8 of RD). And it's in far better condition than the ones Robert Llewellyn still has: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JFIfDpQlqIo :lol

Photos were taken indoors with flash - the flesh-colour shading is more subtle in reality.

Surprised I've not seen a bust of this guy yet!

So what's the best way to display this so that the latex doesn't get damaged? I was going to put it on a polystyrene head, but I'm sure I read (on here I think) than polystyrene fuses with latex. Is that correct?

The movie has truly been in development hell. Don't think that term has ever applied more to a movie... well maybe besides Terry Gilliam's Don Quijote, :p

But that is certainly a great score. Congrats!

Very cool!

Is it latex(like a halloween mask) or foam latex(soft and squishy)?

For a mask stand, what I do it tape in glass eyes and stuff it with plastic bags. Then use a paper towel holder or an empt coke bottle, with some sand in the bottom, to display it.

there are some people that make mask stands and cases also.

The mask is latex (like a halloween mask), rather than foam latex.

I've been corresponding with the head of the Official Red Dwarf Fan Club trying to authenticate this piece. From our conversation and my photos, we think that this was a production-made prototype head - possibly a test piece that would have been sent to GNP for approval before being sent to the company who made them in number (hence why it's sprayed flesh-colour to give the final look without colour dye or make-up). You can also see that the eyes and lips are cut square rather than feathered for application to the skin.

Anyone know if fake eyes, with surrounding eyelids and skin, are available to put inside it to make it more lifelike?

:eek:eek:eek
NO FREAKIN' WAY!!!
OMG!
That surpasses cool!!! (y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Wampa is the man with the info on preserving props of this nature. Shoot him a PM or check his past posts for some great tips.

Hmm... I wonder if that strengthens the prototype theory? The screen-masks around those seasons look very spongy and foamy- much more so than regular latex would allow.

That's what I originally thought, but if you watch the YouTube video I posted the link to in the first post you can see that the masks were infact latex.

Now that is too cool! Great find!

Has anyone here ever done a full Kryten suit?

John...

That is beyond great!
If you really want to preserve foam latex, you should technically keep in an airtight container in the DARK. Of course, that precludes one from displaying it.
Years ago, i had planned to do the 7th season suit and mask.
Alas, life intervened.
