Recreating movie stills with your props

So whilst the kid was napping today, I got bored and decided to do a little project. I recreated the shot from LOTR where Gandalf opens the door at Bilbo's house, and we see a closeup of the One Ring sitting on the floor. I was very happy with how it came out, and actually would have put more than an hour of effort in if I had thought it would have worked this well, LOL. I plan on doing this with more props now. I have a couple ideas that will be fun... anyway, here it is:

added the actual shot for comparison. I'll probably make another attempt, trying to make it as indistinguishable as I can. Like I said, the above attempt took just over an hour from conception to final product...

How'd you do the floor?

Is that a JH ring?

Hey I totally forgot about this! The floor is just a piece of sculpey I made/painted in about 1 hour. Its not a JH ring, its a very accurate knock off I came across.

Heres another. I cheated on this one. Its a shot of Two Face's coin from The Dark Knight. I couldnt get a good color match on anything in my house for the wood, so I photoshopped in my PTK coin into the shot from the movie. I am pretty pleased with how it came out.

Could be better with a more ragged background, but it was fun trying to match the movie.

For your LOTR recreation, there's two problems I noticed. The first is that there isn't any dirt on the floor (which I can understand, you're doing this for fun not for 100% accuracy). The second thing, and this is a noticeable one for me: the scale of the ring in your shot. In comparison to the screen capture, the scale of the ring is off in your shot. In fact, it looks a bit bigger in comparison to the one from the screencap.

But overall, I like the idea. I'd love to try something like that sometime.

Considering you did that in an hour, I reckon you did a pretty good job! Just remember, for next time, that lens choice makes a huge difference in how something appears; and, yes, as well as a little bit of dirt.
