Recasting the sealab??

Is recasting the aurora sealab for members or anyone for that matter frowned upon?

I recently aquired the sealab, and was discreetly asked if I would sell him casts. I really have no problem doing so, because I know how hard it is to find. Especially at its going price.

Thanks!
Edward

Recasting is when you make a cast of someone elses artwork/prop. The studio scale builders make casts of model parts all the time. There should be no problem.

If you are talking about just recasting a piece of a model to replace a broken one or for kit bashing to build something else I think it would be fine.
The way I see folks talk about it, it is only "bad" recasting if you do the whole model, that makes it wrong. That would be like making copies of any out of production model (like the million Horizon recasts that are on eBay every year - long out of production models.)

Well, Aurora's been out of business for 30 years or more, and no one's ever made this available again, so I say go for it! :)

I remember before Polar Lights came along, I was going to try to "re-issue" all the old Aurora monster models, but they beat me to it and did a better job than I could have, so I stood down. :thumbsup

I don't see any problem with that. I've cast pieces for friends of kits before. Unless you are trying to recast the whole kit and make a profit from it you might find people that have a problem with that.

I agree with that type of view. If something has been out of production a long time, and no other company is offering it (or even something similar) you are not "stealing" anything from anybody. You are making something available that is not available in any regular sense. I do think some people disagree with that, and I am sure people could argue for the next 100 years on where to draw that "out of production = Ok to recast" timeline.:rolleyes

I 2 say go for it, I eas looking at one on ebay months ago and it was going for 300+ boy let me know if you do thanks.
I need some parts.

Making copies of parts from a kit for your own use is more than acceptable. Making copies of an entire kit, where the originator is trying to sell the same thing is not. Since Aurora is out of business and no one has re-issued this kit, no harm done.

I know of one garage kit company that was selling a recast of the Voyager that Aurora produced in it's heyday. Of course, now it is to be repopped by Moebius.

In spite of the fact it was a poor seller when Aurora issued it, perhaps Moebius will consider helping out the poor StarWars modellers with a repop of the SeaLab kit; it would make a cool addition to a Seaview diorama !
