Recast Alert: Tusken Raider Parts

The tooth is obvious. I hand-shaped it. The notches in the front are intentionally different widths and the form and contours are very distinctive. Another tell-tale sign is the depth of the part as obscured by the mask which is pretty much arbitrary.

The dimensions of the metal parts are identical in all angles, wall thicknesses, and proportions. Trust me. The only difference is that I don't thread the two tusk parts. I only thread the horns. Otherwise, the parts are the same.

In all fairness, I trust my dimensions of those parts to be as accurate as can be mathematically scaled without having the original in front of you. But after this person recast the tooth piece I seriously doubt that they came up with those dimensions through their own research.

I dug around a little and found that I sold this person a mask kit back in May after they lost an ebay auction for one. I've always tried to stay away from ebay for this kind of reason, so I'm kind of kicking myself. I guess I'm giving my self a "blame the victim" trip right now, but I knew that ebay is a slippery slope if you've got something good.

I emailed the seller and of course they're not reasonable enough to understand why it's not okay to directly recast somone's work. If anyone is feeling supportive, an email to this person (their address is loud and clear in their auction) would be apprecited to help show that it's not okay to rip off people's work.

I have a regular job and have never had the time to make as many masks as the open market would support, so this kind of thing isn't entirely unexpected. Actually I've always welcomed other people to make or sell scratchbuilt Raider masks. I even gave an RPF'er my blessing to sell resin parts of his own dimensions, which was cool of him to ask because he didn't have to.

Oh well. Maybe getting recast is a badge of honor if it doesn't go on forever. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

When I was selling my resin kits, I had one person tell me that he wanted a kit so he could recast them as well as to get the dimensions so a friend could make some out of metal.......I kid you not.

Oh man... If I ever finish my ABC, I have to think twice before selling it on eBay.

But if I did, I kinda am illegal myself as I don't have the rights ofcourse...

But this is indeed a nightmare, your hard work being copied.

LOL ... when I started doing the FettLights, I posted the schematics on-line so any DIYers could make one themselves. The only thing I wouldn't give out was the source code to program the PIC micro (had to keep SOMETHING my own). Anyway, I had a guy e-mail me asking for the code, and specifically told me he was building up a few of these to sell (also asked me how much he should sell them for). Yeah ...

Sorry to hear about your recast situation ... but good luck with your persuits. :)

That blows. Man, how freaking hard would it be to do your own "teeth" without recasting yours? That's just plain LAZY.

As far as the metal parts goes, if he bought a set from you, he probably did copy the measurements.

Look at it this way - Looks like you set the standard. ;)

Damn Adam that sucks. I guess you could take it as a compliment but it is still really crappy. I hate people like this. Well one thing is still for sure, I will continue to purchase my tusken needs from you.

That's a bummer Adam. I've always tried to send people your way whenever possible when looking for the raider mask.

I've learned a similiar lesson and am waiting for another day that is in the same ball park as yours :unsure It's ultimately inevitable.

I had a well known builder actually who contacted me wanting more information regarding a popular costume that I have been researching for years. It was obvious he wanted me to share my research so he could benefit from it by selling his stuff and when I stopped feeding him information he made me look like the bad guy and said I never shared any information and that i just dangled it out there to show off ??? :confused And it's unfortunate because he is a very well known builder and I used to recommend his stuff all the time until this.
No more.
