Are the Rebel Fleet trooper boxes the same as worn by Imperial officers?

The screen-used imperial belt boxes were supposedly cigarette cases of sheet metal, worn with the bottom out.
I once found a single matching box in an antique store but didn't buy it.
I have cast-aluminium project boxes for my Imperial costume but the dimensions are not the same and they lack the lip from the sheet metal lid.
