REALISTIC STAR WARS MURALS ANY TIPS OR IDEAS?

GF

What I want to achieve is to take a few walls in my basement and make life size murals, like seeing threw a door or window incorporating vaccuformed wall panels with lights ect...for a realistic 3D look.

I have a section in my basement that has a octogon shape room
astually 3 walls which I would like to cover with printed wall paper or backlit mylar giving the illusion that I could actually walk into the set, example the interior of the Death Star,Star Destroyer ect...

Another wall I want to give the illusion that I could walk threw fake doors into a Death Star room, incorporating fake opened doors revealing a room like you could just walk into. I found a place in UK which can print any size murals with HI Def photos, here's the link http://starwars.myfotowalls.com/home.php
I'm sure I can find someone locally, my only problem is getting perfect angle Hi resolution screen cap photos for the illusion. I have a few ideas that come to mind but with the many talented people here I'm sure it will help.

Yikes. They only want between 1-5mb. I work for a company in Toronto, we do print a wallpaper type material, but request images much higher than that. If they up res the file 1600% you'll get very poor quality, even using a fractal based scaling program. I don't know, maybe my standards are just higher than theirs. I'd request a sample from something you've sent them before committing any serious money.

Thanks for the info, yes I need high quality photo especially if it's going to cover a full wall, what does your company require and do they make custom jobs if I have the photos?

Thanks, GFollano

Talisen has that right. You need as high a resolution print as you can provide them. They are probably printing at 300dpi or less and do billboards which look good at resolutions lower than 100dpi (ppi). Probably need a 9mb or better for good close view range mural. You can get it printed on an adhesive backed vinyl that will apply to any flat surface such as floated wallboard or better to a pvc or masonite board and attached to the wall with velcro to remove when you want to change things up a bit.

I posted this earlier as well.

We should have the mods merge the threads and try and see how we can get these in the US.

Thanks for the infos guys

Sorry for my ignorance but can I get a pretty good resolution from the SE SW DVD screen caps? I guess the best would be prints from 35mm cells but impossible to get.

I checked on that this morning with my Uncle who does graphic work. No way you can get enough resolution from a DVD grab to make anything larger than a 5" by 7" photo. He also said 35mm cells are the best way to go.

Hey GFollano,

I'm just the Digital guy, but basically we need an image and a size. And as mentioned before, the better quality and size of the original the better the final product. I'm not sure how working with material like SW is. I'm thinking if it's for personal use, like painting your own mural...?

Interestingly enough, my boss and I have been discussing the idea of custom wallpaper as a consumer product since we just did one for his friends home theater, and we are working up a design for wallpaper to advertise this for a Home Designer store near Toronto.

As for getting the imagery- You have to be careful with printed images (scanning them) because of the printing screen pattern, could cause a moire pattern when output. You really need a very large printed image to scan in - or a photograph which has no screen pattern.

And I'd agree that screencaps are not the best to work from. Mind you, going to such a large scale you would be expected to stand a certain distance away to full comprehend the image. We have had some decent successes with some lower that preferred images.

If you can get something scanned from film at a decently high res that's the best solution.

PM me if you want to take this any further

GF,

I think your best option would be to decide what you want and then post up asking for hi-res versions of that image. Screencaps (even HD ones) aren't going to be good enough. A lot of people on this board have hi-res photos of a lot of things from what I've seen.

Another option if you're looking for something location-based (like one of the sets) is find someone that has a 3D model of it. For example I know someone that has modelled the Tantive interior in freakishly exacting detail - I'd bet that could be output in any resolution you require. There's a few sites out there that have a lot of CG modelling guys that specialize in SW stuff.

Scott,

Great idea.

I did not even think about 3D models, that would be perfect and super sharp looking for the size I need.
Do you have any links? I will make a search and a new post.

Thanks, GFollano

Bryan, in your case you could even as for people with studio scale models and photography skills to recreate the models angles and take decent pics. the blurred backgrounds could be easily recreated.

GF, While 35mm would be better it's still a limited format. The size is so small that blowing it up too much would show film grain. Your best bet would be to use a 4x5 or 8x10 negative/transparency. Check out Cloud City Collectibles. They sell old Kenner product negatives. They may have something of just an enviroment.

Thanks for the link Jeff,

I found a few nice ESB Bespin freezing chamber scenes in 4x5. I will check out more photos, they have thousands of them.

Scott

Do you have the contact of the guy who modelled the tantative interior?

Thanks, GFollano
