"Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle - Update 5.2.15

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle - Updated 7-25-2011

I don't know what I was thinking when I started testing textures (the last update you guys saw). I get so excited about the fun part - the face - that I completely neglect the rest of my sculpt! Yeah, it was "blocked in," but working on something like this, it's really best to bring each part of the sculpt to the same state of finish in passes. That way, you're sure each part continues to work with each other part in balance as you go. I did NOT have the back of the head and the neck sculpted to the same degree of completion as the face - not even close! The last couple times I worked (short sessions) I buckled down and began to refine the neck (adding folds) and the back of the head (on which I'm beginning to rough in a scalloped track to the base and down the neck). I allowed myself to indulge in carving a few rough details and scaling to the face here and there, but you won't see a lot of progress in that area. Still a long way to go, but here's where he sits tonight!

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle - ready for molding!

I've actually had a bit of shop time recently - but it's been devoted to another project altogether! I'll start a thread for that one soon - it'll probably be of interest to most who are into this one.

There is a fiberglassing component of that project though, and when that step rolls around I'll likely try to do the turtle's mother mold as well. He's still sitting under the rubber!

Hey westie-

I feel the need to bump this and ask if there are any updates (as well as expose this to new people who haven't seen this thread)? I've been watching (lurking) with great excitement and anticipation for some time now :popcorn

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle - ready for molding!

I took the advice of someone above and learned to fiberglass. Plasti-paste doesn't cut it. I started a 3-piece fiberglass mother mold last night and hope to finish it this week! Only one year since I finished the sculpture... There's a good chance that I have too many things going on in my life.

Thanks for the continued interest!

Slow going as usual! Two of the three mother mold sections are fiberglassed. So close!

Happy new year, everyone! Believe it or not, I finally laid up the third section of the mother mold!

Late progress is better than no progress, no?

YAAAAAA! 2014 is going to be a good year.

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle - ready for molding!

The mold seems to have turned out perfectly! I'll do a test casting this week to be sure - but even if it's got flaws worth scrapping it over, the sculpt actually survived the demolding process unharmed too. Looks like I should be able to make a few of these after all!

Can't believe I'm finally across this line. What a long wait...

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle - Mold Completed Jan 2014!

Nice work. Douglas! Can't wait to see a painted casting.

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle - Mold Completed Jan 2014!

Did a test resin/foam casting - it's flawed but very promising! I didn't see how little resin was getting into the jaw area. After the resin shell, I filled it with expanding foam. I don't think I'll need the foam though... If I do thicker resin castings they should hold their shape, I think.

I'll pick up some more resin tomorrow and get one pulled correctly :)

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle - Test Casting 1/6/14

Awesome! You can already tell it will be a clean pull next.

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle - Test Casting 1/6/14

Thanks!

I kind of knew it wasn't enough resin as I added the second pour. I only had a trial kit size of the 65D; today I'm going to go pick up two gallons, and I'll make sure each pull has a nice thick covering. This one won't go to waste - I can use it for paint and mask/bandana tests.

I'm going to PM you with some questions about Dragon Skin, Deric!

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle - Test Casting 1/6/14

Awesome! Been patiently waiting to see how this was going to turn out. Great job!

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle - Test Casting 1/6/14

Can't wait to see a good pull. The flawed one looks great, too.

Re: "Real" Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle - Test Casting 1/6/14
