Real hollywood tough guys.

Correction: in Michael Mann's "Thief" Dennis Farina was armed with a High Standard Model 10 semiauto bullpup shotgun. It's not machine gun.

I have to add the wonderful actor Charles Durning who passed away at the end of 2012 served in WWII. He fought and was wounded at Normandy. Durning received multiple honors including Silver and Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.

Don't forget Dracula himself Christopher Lee. Member of the British Special Forces during WW2.

It's yahoo news so i'm not shocked that it's not the best list lol. I remember hearing the story of Christopher Lee telling Peter Jackson that he go the sound of a man being killed from behind wrong and it kinda disturbed folks how matter of factly he said it lol.

:lol

Ya, I heard that too. Jackson told him to scream when stabbed in the back and Lee said that it's more of a strong exhale and they got into an argument. Jackson later asked someone else how would Lee know and then was told. :)

Both Lee and David Niven made it a point not to talk about their experiences during the war. They didn't want it sensationalized by the press (who were eager for celebrity war stories). Very classy move. :thumbsup

Yep. This is included on the Special Features for Return of the King. It's told by both Jackson and Lee, with a slightly comedic touch. Lee says something like, "Without going into too much detail, from my experience in OSS, I explained what it really sounds like when a man is stabbed in the back from behind. That it isn't a cry out but more of a (exhales heavily)'.. lol

They also snubbed Edward Albert, he was a Navy corpsman in WWII.

I think the list is more higher profile names. Your average movie goer doesn't know Edward Albert, Charles Durning, Audie Murphy, or for that matter even (shivers) David Niven.

The omission of Christopher Lee though is suspect. as he's had loads of work recently to keep him in the public eye. :)

Yeah, but as an old dude who plays evil wizards and distant fathers. Not as the guy who served, at least partially, as the basis for the literary version of James Bond. Kinda puts the opening of (I think) Diamonds Are Forever into sharp relief -- that sequence describing the foul breath exhaled by one of Bond's targets after he'd thrust a knife into him, and how it still stank in his nostrils over the eggs he was having for breakfast.

True. I'm just going by a casual "ya, he's that old guy right?" kind of recognition.

James Arness also was severely wounded during WWII. When the US landed at Anzio, because of his height, Arness was first out of the boat--he was being used to measure the water's depth. The first guys in often are the first guys shot.

Although not an actor, Hemingway was the first American wounded in Italy in WW One. He was serving with the Italian Ambulance Corps and while at the front handing out cigarettes and chocolate bars, etc., a trench mortar landed feet away. It killed the guy in front of him and sent shrapnel through EH's legs. Still, he picked up another wounded guy and ran like hell and was raked with machine gun fire through the legs and scrotum (ouch!!!). He kept some of the shrapnel and bullets as souvenirs the rest of his life.
