Pretty cool event THIS SUNDAY for those of you in the Los Angeles area:

Join us on Sunday February 17th for a very special 50th Anniversary salute to Visual Effects Legend Ray Harryhausen and the film "Seventh Voyage of Sinbad". Ray will be appearing at the Every Picture Tells a Story gallery in Santa Monica to sign books and a new print from "Seventh Voyage of Sinbad." There will also be an exhibit of his other prints and artwork from his films.

Following the booksigning and reception, there will be a special screening of "Seventh Voyage of Sinbad" across the street at the Aero Theatre. If the opportunity to see this classic film on the big screen in a neighborhood theater isn't enough, the screening will feature live commentary DURING the film from Ray Harryhausen, Dennis Muren, Phil Tippet, Randy Cook, and composer Bernard Herrmann's biographer Steve Smith. VES member Arnold Kunert will be moderating. Think of it as a DVD commentary track, but LIVE and on the BIG screen! Gene Kozicki will also be digging up his usual collection of artifacts and books and photos for display in the Aero's lobby.

The book signing and reception starts at 3pm at the Every Picture Tells a Story Gallery - 1311-C Montana Ave., Santa Monica, Ca. http://www.everypicture.com/

The screening begins at 5pm at the Aero Theatre, directly across the street from the gallery. It is highly recommended that you order tickets in advance through http://www.fandango.com/the7thvoyageofsinbad_732/movietimes?date=2/17/2008 as this special event will likely sell out!

I just checked with the theater and they've got about 100 seats left - likely those will go quick on Sunday.

Hope some of you can make it...........

Gene

OK - just got back from this. It never ceases to amaze me that Ray Harryhausen can draw such a big crowd. It really is great to see. I think he draws his energy from all the good will.

He signed darn near everything for two solid hours, then spoke to a sell-out crowd over at the theater. I'm less than half his age, and I was exhausted after setting up all the stuff in the lobby!

Dennis Muren was sick and couldn't make it, but by chance, Ken Ralston showed up to see Ray and we put him to work.

From left to right in the group shot is Ray, his manger Arnold Kunert, Ken Ralston, Bernard Hermann's biographer Steven Smith, Kathryn Grant Crosby (who was in the film and was Bing Crosby's wife), and Phil Tippet. Randy Cook was standing just out of frame.

The event was a huge success and it will likely be a regular feature at the Aero.

Thanks to RPF-er Sandcrawler for helping me out and taking a couple of the photos.

Aww man, why do I have to live on the East Cost! :cry

:unsure
I'm on the east coast too. Of the U.K. :angry

Re: Ray Harryhausen/Dennis Muren/Phil Tippet - In person this weekend!

I live on the West Coast, but 500 miles away, and 24 hour notice on this event. That doesn't cut it, dang I wish I knew about this sooner, I might have really tried to make it. That is a great event from a classic time that got me into SciFi.

Sounds like a great time will be had by all!

Well, heck - 340 days out of the year, you live closer to Ray than most of us.

Gene

Gene, you're absolutely right, of course.
The thing is, these events are few and far between in the U.K.
I wish the U.K. shared your (the U.S.) enthusiasm for Ray - and of course Phil and Dennis.
Boy, I'd love to meet Dennis!

Re: Ray Harryhausen/Dennis Muren/Phil Tippet - In person this weekend!

It doesn't say but will Phil Tippet and Dennis Muren be signing autographs as well?

Re: Ray Harryhausen/Dennis Muren/Phil Tippet - In person this weekend!

I don't know if Phil and Dennis will be signing. I think they are coming down that day and I don't know if they will make it to the reception much beforehand. And it can get really crowded in the Aero's lobby - so I know there are no formal plans for setting something up there.

My favorite story about this - I was talking to Dennis Muren about the event last week, and he said, "You know, I had this idea. Is there any way we can sit up on stage so that silhouettes of our heads can be seen in the picture? Like in Mystery Science Theater?" I thought that was so cool............

Oh man, I would have loved to have gone!

Nice pics, I bet the discussion was VERY interesting!

Thanks for sharing the photos.

It's wonderful to hear that the event drew a crowd and that folks still appreciate Harryhausen's work!

I have a friend in LA who was at both the book signing and the film screening. Turns out Patrick Wayne - John Wayne's son - is either a friend, a big fan, or both, because he came by for a photo-op. During the screening, I heard Ray had a terrific sense of humor and was self-deprecating when some really cheesy FX techniques were employed, like the obvious buckets of water that were tossed at the actors standing on the deck of the ship from outside the frame to envoke a stormy sea... Man, that must have been a fun job - probably very hard to keep a straight face during the shooting! :lol

My friend also told me Ray joked with the audience to "please don't bring up the number of ribs on the skeleton" in reference to several ribs too many that he had sculpted on the 8" tall macquette...:lol I have the DVD and till this day am amazed how seemlessly the sword fight with the skeleton was choreographed! More about it here:

I'll definitely try and make it out to the next screening with Ray of "Jason and the Argonaughts."

By the way, Gene - was that your MR AT-AT walker in the theater lobby?

Yeah, all the junk in the lobby was mine.

Patrick Wayne was in 'Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger'. He showed up to the reception as did Joan Taylor (to whom Ray presented a Japanese licensed replica of his Ymir puppet) and Dennis Kilbane (one of the actors from 'Valley of Gwangi'.)

We do about one or two of these 'Ray-fests' a year, between the Every Picture Gallery/Aero Theatre & San Diego Comic Con, and every one of them is packed.

We had a line around the corner and the theatre was sold out. The print, I found out, was brand new. The print was struck on Friday for the screening on Sunday - that's new! And it was perfect. It's probably safe to say that that particular print looked as good, if not better, in 2008 than in 1958.

Gene

PS - Ray had a great comment about the skeleton - he said "I don't know why everyone is so afraid of skeletons, we all have one inside us."

I'll dig up some more photos and post them.
