Rango- A parent's point of view. No Spoilers

I took my kids to see Rango tonight. Really funny. Probably the most entertaining animated film I've seen.
That being said, It was obviously made with adults in mind but was taken a little too far. 85% of the dialog sailed over my 5 yr old's head. He was asleep half way through it. I don't think anyone below a 6th grade english level would have understood a lot of the words that were used. A few jokes that were sexual in nature. Kid's probably didn't understand them but I thought they were unnecessary. Gratuitous use of "damn" and "hell".

Of course it's up to you to decide what you want your kids to see but I'm not sure it's even worth taking kids 8 and under.

I kinda figured it was aimed at slightly older kids from the commercial but I figured like Shrek it would have stuff for all ages. I wouldn't be so worried about those words being used considering what i came home from kindergarden saying lol but that said it's a surprise what gets into PG movies these days. I remember the big deal back in 86 in Transformers when spike said "Oh ****".

My family showed me Star Trek: The Motion Picture when I was about 5-6, and that film was AWESOME, even though I understood next to nothing on what was going on.

Yeah alot of the early movies i saw were like that. It was always the ships that got my attention in the early star treks.

So, "damn" and "hell" are considered bad words?

How are you meant to damn someone to Hell if you can't say 'em?

Anything Bill Nighy says is automatically flagged by parent groups as TOO AWESOME FOR CHILDREN.

Wow you mean Tim Conway resurrected one of his old characters and they made it a feature? ;)

Rango looks good....Shrek....didn't like a single one of them. When you start introducing potty humor to kids it crosses the line of "not funny anymore." In fact it moves to insult a child's mind. Thankfully Pixar Animations do not do that....they survive on their excellent humor and hidden adult humor.

+100! (y)thumbsup

Part of the problem with making feature-length animated films is finding a balance so they're entertaining for kids and their parents (or other adults); some filmmakers are simply better at it than others.

The gf and I went to dinner last night and tried to time a movie to go see afterwards. The only option we had interest in was Rango. The other movie we wanted to see wasn't until 2 hours later. Poor planning I guess :p

Rango was ok. It had some deep moments for sure and a truly great story...but I really felt it didn't offer as much to me as Shrek and other animated films that I really enjoyed. Johnny Depp is the main reason I wanted to see this because I love almost all of his work.

IMO it was ok and I'm sure kids would love it but I wouldn't recommend it, honestly. Just my 2 cents. But then again I worked a long day, hit the gym for 2 hours and then we went...so I was really tired by the time the movie started lol

I'm not a parent, but there isn't another Rango thread here.

I thought the movie was incredible.
I'm actually shocked any studio would allow an animated movie this esoteric to be made on the scale this one was. I guess if anyone can do it, Verbinski is the guy.

It feels like if Kubrick directed Shrek meets Chinatown.

It handles its story in a very creative fashion, and I give big Kudos to John Logan and Gore Verbinski for going as deep in as many directions as they did. Don't want to get too spoilery, but the character's journey is externalized in a really fun way. With nods to classic movies, ancient myth, and ... I don't want to spoil it ... this is one not to be missed.

I liked it. It was funny, witty and a pleasure to watch. Not the best movie, but certainly entertaining and definitely gonna buy it on BR and watch it again. :thumbsup

Most children I overhear sound more like the kids from Southpark than anyone wants to admit. I know I was a regular Cartman when I was a kid (away from my parents that is, lol). I am sure "Rango" isnt going to corrupt any of them.
