Rambo Gear

I can't really tell if those boots look like they are canvas sides or not. I haven't seen the film yet either so I cannot say if they are all leather or not . Either way, I always thought that flight boots had zips, not any kind of combat boots.

They look like Jungle Boots with a side zipper to me.

Not all Flight Boots have zippers.

USAF Issue flight boots in the 80's had NO zippers on them but A quick lace metal grommit.

I still have a few pair from when I was on flight status

The boots look leather to me. And the soles look modern. Vietnam era had soles that looked like off road tires.

are we sure about the pants? looks like there is a seam running down the middle of them in that first picture on the irst page..?
also, anyone IDed the Tshirt? or bandana?

Which seam are you talking about, the one on the knee?

I've looked like crazy for the headband material. I've looked at thousands of ethnic swatches online and I can't even tell what type of print it is. If anyone could narrow down what region that type of fabric would be from that would be awesome.

Negative on the t-shirt as well.

Rambos seem to only have ONE eyelet and it looks like its on the OUTSIDE whereas the gaps haev two eyelets?

Got the pants today. They are indeed the correct ones!

There is only one eyelet on the outside, there are two smaller ones on the inside.

Well, I decided to make my own knife. I went to the tractor supply store and bought a two inch wide piece of steel. I had no experience making knives and to be honest, I'm not that handy when it comes to making stuff myself. I wanted that homemade look though. So I took what I had (dremmel, bench grinder, sand paper) and I got to work.

Gil Hibben's (creater of both the Rambo III and the Rambo IV knives) wife saw the pics I posted over on the StalloneZone. They gave me a few tips and I eliminated the grind marks as best I could and took everything down to bare metal.

Since I had no way to heat treat it, Gil graciously offered to touch the knife up and put the correct finish on it at a very reasonable price! I also commissioned him to make me a custom sheath.

A couple of things about this knife.

-I made it to scale with the UC Rambo III knife in order to mod a UC sheath and use it(that idea was scrapped but I had already cut out the knife). Therefore, this knife is roughly 16 1/2 inches long as opposed to the actual knife which is like 18 3/8.

-Since I will be wearing my costume to cons and such, this knife has no blade whatsoever. It is completely blunt. Hopefully this will enable me to wear it without peace tying it so I can have it out for photo ops.

Not bad for a weeks work huh?

More pics to come when I get the knife back today.

Have I mentioned that making your own headband material with an ink pen sucks? The fact that it will pretty much be one time use sucks even more. Somebody find this material please!

Thanks. About 3 hours so far. I'm about 1/3 of the way done. Unfortunately the part that hangs down has to be double sided. :(

Ok....time for some pics. Much of the costume is inaccurate right now. I'm wearing the costume next weekend, and I will continue to upgrade things afterwards. Please give me some criticism.

I still need to weather all of the clothing. Not going to be easy since There is about a foot of snow outside and I need mud. I'll figure something out. I also need to dirty up the headband and wear it a bit lower on my forehead.

My hair will look completely different, but I didn't feel like styling it just to throw the costume on for a couple pics. I have to wear my Anakin costume earlier in the day so I need the brown hair with the highlights. After that, I'm going to go back to the hotel room and dye my hair black.

I'm going to do the rest of the con as Rambo with the bow, then I'm going to go to the gym and change into dirty, sweaty, wounded Rambo with an insanely dirty shirt. I will be wearing that at the after party.

Looks cool so far, nice pants! :)

I think after you finish the design on the headband, you should have it scanned into the computer. Adjust the black levels in photoshop, then print it out on a transparency at 1:1 scale. I used to do this a lot with my old screenprinting business.

After that, all you'd need to do would be to take the transparency with the design and have somebody burn it onto a screen and do a quick screen-print run for you on whatever material you wanted to use (using a high mesh screen so the print would leave a very light footprint). I know I've seen that type of material before... if you couldn't find the right color, I'm sure you could easily dye it yourself in the bathtub or something.

Excellent Idea! I will definitely do that!

That Rambo knife collection is fantastic. Always loved the original knife.
Are they still available, or are they vintage pieces?

Yeah, they are still quite readily available. United Cutlery makes them. Try google and ebay.

- John

That's correct, the UC pieces are still available. Master Cutlery recently got rights to the Rambo name and started making replicas, but there is a big thing about them not getting permission from Lile's estate or Gil Hibben to reproduce the knives. They are quite ugly anyway because they have signatures all over them.

The original Lile or Hibben handmade knives would cost you a pretty penny or two however.
