Ralph had been quite close for a few weeks, things had not been well. Sad to say he passed away earlier today.

I still recall my first visit to his house, can't believe I learned so much in a single day. And to boot: being made a meatloaf sandwich and handed a beer while we talked all over the map about art, illustration, model building, his experiences, what was next for both of us.

When I pulled out my sketchbook and we talked I'd been feeling pretty good about my chances in film design, then it was his turn to go through some of his drawings, paintings, etc... he opened with his color 'sketch' of the opening matte from Star Wars. I was floored. Everything about the painting... it was incredible.

And so was he. Quiet, unassuming, striving. Hardly an ounce to his ego, the Oscar collected dust, and he seemed usually to be thinking about what could be next after so many experiences, opportunities. Examples in many parts of life, and a great self-deprecating but observant wit.

    Good-bye Ralph, thanks my friend.

Echoing all of the above, and thank you to all who read this thread and comment. I am shamelessly stealing this from the front page of his website (will get an okay from Stan or John after... maybe ;-)) Every word is true:

It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Ralph McQuarrie.

People say you should never meet your heroes. Ralph was the exception to that rule. We were all fans of his amazing art long before we were blessed with his friendship. But once you got to know Ralph it was impossible not to become a fan of Ralph the man.

Ralph was a very special person for many more reasons than his undeniable brilliance with a brush. He was an especially kind, sensitive, deep, modest, funny and fascinating gentleman. And as fine a role model as any one could have wished for.

His influence on design will be felt forever. There's no doubt in our hearts that centuries from now amazing spaceships will soar, future cities will rise and someone, somewhere will say...

"that looks like something Ralph McQuarrie painted."

As an artist, Ralph was one of my favorites. Although I never met him, I did get to see his original works at his art exhibit at CV. Seeing his paint strokes truly inspired me to be the best I can be. Thank you Ralph for your contributions.

    That is really bad news.

He had such an impact on me, especially as a kid. I have his twin suns picture in my home. His art changed the world. It is not only iconic, but set the bar for films that hasn't been matched since. What a special man that touched so many.

My condolences to his family and friends.

There is a special place for him in all of us and I would bet somewhere else too.

    I only met RM once.

Apropos of his art, I happened to mention that the designs in Star Wars had really resonated with my dad, who had served aboard an escort carrier during WW II.

Having just ordered a print from McQuarrie moments prior, he had my mailing address. Two or three weeks later I received the print I ordered -- along with an extra print; the one of a fighter pilot racing across the tarmac of the secret rebel base. McQuarrie wrote: "This painting was inspired by guys like your dad."

    Extraordinary.

i feel exactly the same way. As a seven year old, McQuarrie's paintings were all that I had to obsess over when trying to feed the insatiable appetite for more after the movie left the theater. I remember seeing the Star Wars portfolio for the first time at a neighbors house and thinking that these pictures looked even better than the film that was fading in my memory. Seeing the stormtrooper with the lightsaber, vader's early helmet, the early Y-wing gave me as a child the first idea of the 'behind the scenes' that went into film making even existed.

Because there was no internet, or even VHS i would just stare at Mcquarrie's work, lost in the rich details, living in his environments, just wanting to see more.

My empire strikes back sketchbook remains to this day in a section of my bookshelf that i will B-line towards in the event my house is burning down. It was this sketchbook, that made me realize it wasn't actually star wars that i was in love with, it was McQuarrie's work. It is also one of the main reasons, i didn't like the prequels. When I heard Doug Chiang say on the 'making of featurette for TPM' that as a kid he thought that McQuarries ships 'looked wrong' i was appalled and offended.

I can't imagine what my life would be like without Mcquarrie having graced our world with his presence. I am truly saddened with his passing. Thank you mr. mcquarrie for your gift; thank you for fueling my imagination.

    This truly is saddening.

I don't know much about his work before Star Wars but his work on Star Wars made him legendary in the eyes of the fans and very few people had such an influence on the way the films looked. Without him we would not have had the characters as they are today.

As a young fan back then his images were extraordinary and still reasonate with me today 30 years later.

    RIP RMcQ

As soon as I read the words about his passing, it hurt. I genuinely hurt inside. I will always be inspired by his visions on canvas. it's often that my mind wanders as I picture a reality based on his art. I can just hear the desolate winds on his paintings of a barren tatooine.

Goodbye Ralph. I wish I'd met you

He fuelled so many ideas and feelings as a child, and occupied a rare brief moment when the images from a film were remembered equally as brush strokes in a painting. A true talent from a more traditional/ considered time has left us. His paintings remain - thank you. RIP Ralph.

My Dad bought me this book when it first came out, and I looked at it so many times inspired to how someone could come up with everything he did, and then put it into reality. There will never be another like him. although worse for wear I still have to book.

A huge loss. I was very disappointed that he wasn´t able to make it to CE in London in 2007 :(

The signed X-Wing/Tie-Fighter chase concept design is one of my most prized posessions.

As with a lot of you guys, Ralph´s art quenched my thirst for more Star Wars when there was not much in the late 1970ies to go on. The first contact that I had with his artwork was the y-wing on its attack run towards the death star. The art books weren´t available in Germany at that time, but a few of his paintings would always make it into magazines and newspapers. A true inspiration, I wish I would have met him in person.

    RIP Mr.McQ.
