Almost there.. In my quick attempt to mock assemble it yesterday, i had parts switched. now i've got it all worked out :) although i think i skipped a step.i have parts left over. i assume some of those parts are the skin snaps i ordered.. will have to go back and re-read to see which step i missed.

yesterday i used the yellow marker to keep my progress in order.. should have continued that today :)

Coming Soon, Construction Video of all the photo's and video here.,...hopefully it'll help out some of my other fellow clue less newbies :)

Frame is done..minus center foot plate. I wanted to see how tight the skins fit, so i tied 'em on. it's real tight in the front with the LDP. Tommorow, I hope to get the dome permanent on the top of the frame by drilling through the rockler and putting screws on. not sure i understood the instructions 100%, so just want to confirm before i do it :)

now that i know i've been visualizing this rockler bearing install wrong, i've got to take that off, counterink the holes from the top, re-attach, and drill the screws from the top side in all the way to the bottom.

hopefully in the next two hours the dome should be firmly attached to the frame. Now that I know the proper name for the skin mounting blocks, i can look up info (however hopefuless that is for me) and see how to use those properly to instal the skins :)

here it is before i went out and got the two extra nuts for each screw...
other than that, it should look good..

Facebook
here it is turning just sitting on top of the screws, not pushed all the way in..

that's it till july 31st

Actually you can build one of these in plastic for considerably less than a metal one. There are plans for basically an all plastic one. Granted it had an R5-D4 head but I believed it weighed only 35 lbs. But there is a plastic R2 dome available.

If you bought all resin parts to detail with it wouldn't cost too much. You should join the Astromech forum and check it out. It can be done. I just wish I had the time to finish mine.

I had the time to finish mine.
i have nothing but time, probably why it's this far done since only february :).

Ordered three more parts for the leg. Only 13 more parts left to go..

tommorow, maybe i can get the pitman motor spinning the dome and skins attached. coming back north for TNG 25th theater experience :)

a weekend gone, and i can not seem to find any pictures or tutorials on how to instal the pitman motor/how to get the head spinning. I still think I'm missing one part. isn't there a giant wheel that attaches to the rockler bearing?

reading the instructions for the top mounting blocks, I HOPE This looks right... They even up pretty good in the back.. the front is a tighter fit..

perhaps not the most even job in the world. my front skins got really bent out of shape somehow. Also, judging hole distance on back skins with whiteout to mark screw center isn't the most accurate of ways to do this i'm sure, but it worked..

front and back skins now on...step 4 done.

And it's coming along nicely. :thumbsup

My other problem is I want mine to have all the bells and whistles and I know nothing about electronics.

does anyone have the commando 8 dome setup? I need to see how i attach it to the frame to get the dome spinning.

the photos I have found so far seem to have the A and A gear set instaled, which seems pretty straightforward..

as you can hopefully see, the back frames fit pretty good. The Back front frames fit pretty good. But the front front frame got so warped somehow, that it's not quite a tight fit. not sure if there is a way to fix that other than extra screws in the warped area in the hopes that pressure over time will fit it back into shape..

all the backs are pretty even and lined up.. it's the front one that needs major work.
