Limited Run Quill's boot rocket controls w/LIGHTS! - Star Lord - Guardians of the Galaxy

I decided to make my own sculpt of the rocket controls so I could integrate working lights into the design. One thing I haven't seen anyone offer yet is a version that actually lights up. You'll notice not only is there a ring of light around the button, but above it as well.

I'm offering these both in finished and unfinished versions.

Both will already have the electronic housing embedded, so if you choose unfinished, all it will need is paint!

Each set includes 2 textured pre-cut fabric pieces that go behind the controllers and 2 pieces of fusible web that can be cut to shape and heat-set with an iron to your pants. Also included are 2 mounting options, either velcro or magnets to allow easy removal for washing. You can turn the unit on by pressing it against your leg. If you have a con or another event you are wearing these to, you can leave them on all day with their 200+ hrs of battery life! The units are actually activated by a button on the back-side which bubbles out about 1/4". This allows for ease of battery changes while still maintaining a visually thin profile.

I've decided on materials. I'm casting these in a couple different mediums for proper light dissipation, a translucent thermoplastic for the core with a smooth-cast 300 white resin shell.

Prices are as follows:
$60 for an unfinished pair
$80 for a finished pair

As stated above, both versions include the PCB units with batteries and LEDs all ready to go.

Battery life is around 200+ hrs on these.
Each pair ordered will come with 2 batteries.
Additional batteries:
$1/ea

Shipping:
$6.95 worldwide

(I'll need about 2 weeks for fabrication on these.)

I will ship in the exact order of those who expressed interest chronologically for all payments received up until a March 8th deadline. After March 8th those on the interest list who I still have not received payment from forfeit their spot and will be dropped to the bottom of the list.

Thanks again everyone! :cheers

Build progression:

This is my first time using Monster Clay. Amazing stuff! I like it so much more than the standard plasticine clays. I got the firm clay. I like that you can microwave it, or use hot water to soften it up.

Here is my initial sculpt:

I built it around a yellow housing that holds the PCB unit. I cut out the button itself because I had a piece that fit perfect with the right dimension and shape.

This is the piece I used. It's a charm my wife made for her bracelets and other jewelry she sells on Etsy.

I then built a housing to pour the mold.
a20141123_150617.jpg

This is the first cast in thermoplastic.
a20141123_223915.jpg

I started with a base matte black to block out the light.
a20141124_002225.jpg

I then sprayed it in a chrome coat.
a20141124_010227.jpg

My first finished attempt after a black wash and some weathering. The thermoplastic is thicker than resin when poured so I lost some detail and it created too many air bubbles. It also took 4 coats of paint to block out the light properly.
a20141124_130743.jpg

I thought I might try resin to see how the light would shine through.
a20141125_000759.jpg

Here is the same LED under a couple different lighting conditions. Much better!
a20141125_000834.jpg

Here is an example of the resin cast straight out of the mold.

The two versions next to each other for comparison. I wasn't as heavy handed on the weathering for the resin version.

I didn't do any sanding on either of these as they are just my prototypes and I was eager to show proof of concept. The finished versions for the production run will be a little more cleaned up and smoother as you can see here:

The only issue with the resin version is lighting the two sections above the button. I'm still working on a solution to that using a combination of thermoplastic and resin.

I'll have more to show soon!

Interested in an unfinished pair!

Is there a switch to toggle on/off the lights?

Yes, the lights activate with a push button control, just like in the movie.

Oh hell, put me down for interested in a finished pair.

Guess there isnt any room to throw some magnets in there so we can attache them to a base on the pants?

I'm looking at a mounting system. Probably not magnets, but I'll let you know what I come up with. ;)

WOW i was just thinking about this a few days ago about lighted rocket controls but as a remote control to turn on the lights and associated sounds to the rocket boosters. Hint Hint!! Amazing work as always Soulinertia.

Re: Rocket Controls w/LIGHTS! - Star Lord - Guardians of the Galaxy

This one was cast with a resin outer layer and filled with thermoplastic. I think it will work! I then sanded with a base coat of matte black. I'll have more to show on Monday.
