Quick and dirty - Rey's LPA NN-14 Blaster build

After the epic journey that was the Aliens Pulse Rifle, I decided to tackle something quite a bit easier and attempt to finish it within a week or so. Rey's blaster is a very simple design and interesting one of the few Star Wars props not obviously based on an existing weapon.

The original design I believe was by Matthew Savage so that was the starting point for me.

No dramas - everything printed and fitted up just fine.

What I didnt take pictures of however was my new (to me) technique of using Green Stuff World UV resin to fill in the layer lines on all the flat panels. This works a treat and I highly recommend it.

Also new to me, is adding weight(s) to my props to give them a more realistic feel in the hand. I do this by adding ballast to epoxy resin and applying it to the inside of the prop. This is an expensive way to do it so I'll look for alternatives.

Never tried it, would modelling clay work as well epoxy resin? You could use the air dry kind that would harden over time with no run out

For adding weight? Yeah, I guess so.

Modelers usually use lead fishing weights or BB's in glue for adding weight to models that don't balance well.
Airsoft guns usually have chunks of steel in them.

A more expensive but also more environmentally and human friendly option is this stuff called liquid gravity. I found it at my local hobby shop and been meaning to try it in something.

Yeah thats what I'm currently using. Expensive habit.

And here's the finished product!

I started off with Alclad Chrome but that rubs off way too easy so I ended up going with a random old pot of Model Master in 'Steel'. Weathering was done with oil paints.

It's definitely not as shiny as the original but I think it has a nice realistic look to it.

Thanks man! Nah for a 9 day build I'm pretty happy I gotta say. Not a hard one, but a satisfying one.

Looks great! I've been looking for one of these myself. There's tons of 3D prints on Etsy, but I wasn't sure what was accurate/reliable/decent.

Yeah trying to figure out which 3D models are high quality is such a minefield. That's part of the reason I 3D model my own.
