Questions About Bond Films that You Have been Afraid to Ask SPOILERS

The one you mentioned from, DR. NO, takes place before the kill. For me, it adds to the tension and highlights Bond's skills (Gosh, I guess Bond was paying attention THE WHOLE TIME!). This is one of my favorite scenes from the movies, because, without question, it shows that Bond is a killer. He has the advantage; he could just arrest the professor; yet, he kills him. A quip would ruin it. I prefer the tension.

The modern version of this scene, from CR, also works really well: "Yes. Considerably." It's not a quip and demonstrates a distinct coldness to Bond's character. After all, Bond was waiting in that office, looking at a photo of Dryden's family and it made no difference. Dryden is killed without hesitation. It's an amazing scene.

EXACTLY. (y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Two GREAT scenes.

Haven't seen it in over a decade. But loved NSNA.

Here is a question I have...

Kim Bassinger...

In the 89 Batman, when the joker is unleashing gas on the croud of pedestrians... Right after she realizes they are being gassed, she says something there in a deep new York Italian mobster kinda voice.. Not DEEP... But for her...

Anyone know what I'm talking about? It struck me odd when I saw it on opening night.

When the VHS came out I rewinded it... Yeah, there and odd. She's from Georgia. So it can't be her accent slipping in...

I may be crazy, but it's one actual thing I had a "question about a film that I was always afraid to ask".

Just without the spoilers...

You are referring to the "OMG Smilex gas! - HE'S S GONNA KILL EVERYBODY!!!!" line?

I just think she said it quickly and it panic, never really heard a different accent.

Thanks. This thread was a great idea. I've actually spent some time rereading various posts--there are some real James Bond PhDs here.

It's nice to get into the really nerdy details and have people who know what you're talking about! :lol

Def. agree Barryjoe and like the connection you made between the Dr. No and CR scenes...I find the parallel amusing.
We didn't arrange your defection to this thread for your amusement, No. Two. ;)

(edit) Oh, funny thing about CASINO ROYALE. I thought the later scene in Madagascar (chasing the bomb maker) was over the top and just piled up to the miraculous escape. On second viewing, I realized that this was probably meant to be the pre-titles sequence, the typical "mini-mission" extravaganza that started with GOLDFINGER (so many bad tropes and motifs started with the third film, particularly the avalanche of cute quips and Bond smarming it up). Placed AFTER the titles, it's a little awkward. But I still prefer the atmospheric pre-titles sequence they put in, particularly how it ends with a new take on the "spin, shoot at the audience" climax.

One difference between the DR. NO scene with Anthony Dawson and the opening of CASINO ROYALE: Connery displays a bit of distaste and relief after he kills Dent.

Agreed. I really like some examples while I hate others. The example TGG gave was a great one. Lines like "He had a lot of guts" when a guy falls into an industrial snowblower are bad.

They started off a lot more subtle and clever. Still love the pre-credits of Goldfinger "Shocking... Positively shocking". Also when they're used as a response to a legitimate question ie: "What happened to him?" "He blew a fuse" and "Where's Goldfinger?" "Playing his golden harp.".

"She should've kept her mouth shut. "

"I'd say one of their aircraft is missing. " (Reference I think to a wartime movie by Michael Powell.)

"She's had her kicks. "

Which is odd because according to rumor, Moore was Fleming's first choice for Bond, ... .

Noel Coward IIRC.

TRIVIA TREAT: Anthony Dawson reappeared in the Bond films. In addition to acting as Bond for screen tests, he was the unseen Blofeld in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE and I think THUNDERBALL, too. ;)

First rule about DAD...

We don't talk about DAD.

:lol

I was under the impression that he didn't do anything with his heart he merely interrupted the machinery somehow.

OK, I know you said we don't talk about DAD, but how did Col. Moon survive the fall by the waterfall? It's just as implausible as when Bond fell off the bridge in Skyfall

So where does Skyfall fit in the 007 movie timeline?

I'd say after QOS and before Dr No. It would be the only thing that makes sense with the introduction of Moneypenny. And yes sorry to quote a post from 2 pages ago but it's something I've been thinking about since Skyfall.

You could do it so many different ways. It all depends on which story points you want to focus on. :thumbsup

Yeah, I see what you mean D. The introduction of Moneypenny is something that just can't be rationalized at the end of his career. But a lot of things can't be, so bring on that squinty eye!

Does Bond fall in love with Diana Riggs in OHMSS because she reminds him of Vesper? She was attempting suicide by drowning when he first encounters her.

You mean in the film continuity or in the novels?

In the novels it's not really made clear. I don't recall Tracy trying to drown herself, but it's been a while since I read the novels.

In the films...I've decided it's just easier to treat CR as a true reboot. Separate continuity. It's too much headache to try to shoehorn the new Bond films in with the old ones. I mean, how do you explain why M is a woman for one movie but then not for another one?

Sex change... :confused:lol

I agree. This was just a fun exercise I think.

I never got that impression from the book. Obviously in the movies it isn't because Tracy precedes Vesper by about 40 years. :lol

Unless the Craig Bond movies are a complete reboot, they are at least prequels and they predate the Connery films. You just have to ignore that he uses text messaging in Casino Royale, lol.

They are a complete reboot. But you asked if Vesper was an influence on Bond's love for Tracy. It couldn't have been for the film because Vesper wasn't a film character until 40 years after Tracy graced the screen.

Now if you wanted to shoehorn the series together then you could probably make that "in universe" argument.

I def. prefer to mentally shoe horn, even though its fairly difficult. Part of my enjoyment of the films is that it IS one dude and one career.

I understand CR is intended as a reboot but as rodneyfaile said, it's part of the fun.
