Question for the HALO guys about armor

For about the last year I have been interested in Halo. I do not game though and really only know the basic elements of the story. But from a costuming standpoint, I love the armor! And after seeing Timecon's amazing foam build, I was thinking of building a suit in the near future. I am a member of the 405th as well, so I pick up some ideas there too. What I want to know from the people who really know Halo is, am I a minority in the respect that I know nothing about the game but want to participate in the costuming? And also are there any taboos on mixing parts of costumes? Or is it similar to the Predator community I am a member of where putting your own spin on things is a good thing. There are certain helmets I like, but I am fond of the Reach armor. This may sound silly to some, but any advice is appreciated.

Mods: if this needs to be moved to OT, feel free. I figured since it was about costuming it was OK to post it here!

Definitely put your own spin on it if you like. It's what the Spartans always did. If you ever get a chance to play Reach, you'll notice the Spartans customize their armor to suit themselves so if you want to wear a Recon helmet with Scout shoulders for instance, then go for it. I realize that combination was a tad unorthodox in respects of Halo 3, but people do it none the less.

Good to know! Any sites besides the 405th that anyone knows of where it is good reference material for armor and such?

the games themselves are great for pics and refs. You can pause them or use the 360 view and zoom in etc.

I haven't played the games either. I originally got involved in the costuming when I built a Low Res version of the Master Chief for my son for Halloween last year. This year I am doing an ODST Trooper for him. I like the fact that if there are minor differences in your costume it's not a big deal. Do it for yourself and have fun. I have read the some of the books which helps with understanding the basic story line.

You're a member of the 405th, eh? Look up Das Brutus. He's got a mix 'n match mjolnir suit. There is nothing wrong with adding different pieces of armor that you like and making it into a unique piece of art.

I'm Adam from the 405th. Of course, mix match and have fun. Building out of foam flooring tiles is the new thang! Have fun with it.

Awesome guys! Thanks for the tips thus far. Yeah I am wanting to employ the foam method just because I have seen how fantastic it can look. Plus much more user friendly than Pep. Thanks for the link Leander! A bit overwhelming, but informative!

Question - are the visors most people use simply mirrored motorcycle helmet visors?

Im not a massive fan of the games, I really enjoyed H1 and started H3 when I bought my 360. Never finished it though :) Im currently enjoying Reach.

I wanted a Spartan costume purely because I love the design of the armour. Its a great character and as I troop with the UKG a lot, I thought it would make a superb Real Icons costume. Plus having a squad of Spartans at troops just gets me excited :)

Im using a mirrored motorcycle visor for my helmet.
