Question about AP armor

on the AP armor there are little grooves to know where to trim (most people put a blade in the groove and carefully score). My question is when you look at the inside of the armor, the groove is a bump. could you get a dremel and with a sanding bit barely touch the top of the bump on the lowest setting? would that give the same effect with the blade. i have been tring to work on my armor since last Oct. and i dont have steady hands and have been using a blade up against the bump so if the blade slips it will cut the inside instead of the visable side....... thoughts?

thanks

A pair of industrial snips works well.

If you're going to use a Dremel, use the cutting wheelon a high speed as the melting ABS gets in the way as you cut. The high speed is better for clearing the gunk out of the way. But snips would be the way to go if you don't have a steady hand.

the problem with tin snips is that it warps the plastic and the cutting wheel is too thick for the cut i need i.e the seperation of the back and butt plate. that itty bitty line.

I just used snips to cut the bulk of the cast flange away. And a bench mounted belt sander on most of the larger pieces. And then a dremmel with a barrel sander on the smaller ones to trim in closer to the groove.

try Electrician Snips

they are a bit smaller but work well i have found depending on the thinkness of plastic i work for att and they give us these and they work wonders on models as well

I do not know which part you are trying to cut but the principle is the same. IMO, the score marks act as guides so that you can cut along the line by linking up the scores marks with your blade. Some areas you can score, cut the line with your blade, snap and sand.

Well, but unless you are very handy with the dremel tool, there has been tragic stories over at the whitearmor forums. I sure the guys over there will be able to advise you as well.:thumbsup

Move along....

Here is what I have done for my AP.... still WIP

Theres a guy over on FISD right now cutting out his AP armor with a HOT EXACTO KNIFE (12.95 from Amazon.com). He traced the lines with pencil first then cut with teh hot knife. nice results.
