QMX Serenity Prop Info

Sounds really great. (In fact... I think I just reconsidered getting a Han Solo EE in faavor of the Serenity stuff coming.) But I really don't like this "only 1500" Mal's pistol thing. It's gonna be like the Hellboy Samaritan.. but worse, with pieces ending up on e-bay for five times the price.

I would guess they are testing the waters. They are a new company, after all. Of course they will easily sell the 1500, but I think that quite a few people will be put off by the fact that it's the Serenity version, particularly the prop collectors. I don't think your average Browncoat will be shelling out that much and Serenity doesn't have a fraction of the SW fanbase.

True, though I don't know how popular the big Red was when the movie came out (that's when I got into Mignola's work).

But even if they are testing the waters they didn't have to make the regular edition limited. One thing that got me thinking was that the signature edition was coming out after the regular one. Hopefully they'll have ordering up for both at the same time or I'm guessing there will be a lot of disappointed people that skip the regular waiting for the sig. ed. and luck out on getting that too if there is high demand.

Regular edition should be ongoing
Signature edition should be limited

That's my opinion of course. :)

Still interested in hearing whether the trigger and the safety catch and the hammer and clip will be functional or static.

Would love a fully functional prop... though, this will most likely be a static one. :confused

Here's an update that sounds pretty good.
<div class='quotetop'></div>
“We’re doing the Mal pistol. It’ll be resin, plated in brass, copper, with a walnut grip, die cast and machined details, with a nice presentation stand and package and a full-color plaque with the logo and edition number.”

Mal pistols will be available in a limited edition of 1500 pieces around November, December and will retail for $249.00.[/b]
Doesn't sould like it will have moving parts at all though...

Finally got around to listening to this -- cool. And how wonderful that they had access to the whole warehouse.. dang. Sounds like fun. :)

I tend to agree.. seems to me saying "only 1500" is asking for trouble down the line. Unless the market is small and shrinking, it seems down the line they'll end having to decide between not re-releasing, and ticking off potential new customers, or re-releasing a limited item and ticking off their existing customers. But then, they're in the business and I'm not, so I assume they know what they're doing. :)

Honestly though, what I'd REALLY like to see is a production run of the brass shrouds of the pistol, either version. I don't care if it's Firefly or Serenity, or whether it's offered as raw casts that need to be cleaned up and assembled, or polished and assembled around an airsoft -- just so long as it can be mounted to a real .38 to truly copy the hero, I'd be ecstatic.... and pay considerably more than the $200 they're asking for the resin model. Given that (I assume) they have access to the original CAD models, if not the original molds, making a direct copy should have been an easy job.

And honestly.. I *have* a resin model.. as I imagine a good many prop-liking Firefly fans do by now. It'll take more than metal coating and a CoA to get me to drop 200 plus to duplicate what I already have.

I dunno if the edition sizes will really be a problem. I mean, if fans weren't around to shell out seven bucks on the movie enough to make it clear 100 million, what makes you think there will be 1500 people willing to spend 250??

Don't get me wrong. *I* want them to succeed so that they can offer tons and tons of MORE cool stuff. I'll be buying all the Serenity stuff, that's for sure. I'm just not convinced that there's eminent danger of the supply running short due to overwhelming demand.

But I have been wrong in the past. Once or twice.

I've got a Mal resin kit on the way as well, so I'm hoping the QMX one will really blow me away. If not, I just couldn't justify it. It's hard enough trying to already.

I also think that for many people (myself included) a finished piece that costs 250 is worth infinitely more than an unfinished kit that cost 100.

Heck, I even know what I'm doing and I STILL haven't even STARTED my firefly version gun. Oy.

They allege the website will be functional by next Friday — either the 8th or (more likely) the 15th.

So how come none of you guys in the know ever came out and said "This is Steve Dymszo,"?

He quit MR, the company he created, to start another company to make props?

That's huge (weird) news.

Either that, or we're not reading the same magazines...

I've known for quite a while (through hanging at Dr S') but I kinda thought it was up to them to say who is involved.

Wow - I didn't know Steve D was involved with QMX. It's not really all that surprising though given what happened a while back.

Which revolver is Wash's based off of? Them mention it's based off a really odd Italian revolver. Any chance they mean the Mateba?

If I remember correctly about Steve (and I could have these Steves mixed up) but there was a scandal per se about something he said and it was taken wrong on another forum and so he got ousted at work....so maybe this fits in with all that....

Again disclaimer here - it could have been a different guy...maybe some other forum members know what I am talking about....but I am not going to post up all the details b/c I am just going off of memory here.

A little Google research shows Wash's pistol is a dead ringer for the Mateba.

I'm guessing a 4 inch barrel, minimal external mods.

Yeah, it is a Mateba. You can see the hero in the final battle, I think Jayne takes it from River. It seems to have glowing blue lights in the barrel like the Alliance weapons.

You are pretty much right on. There are details deep within the bowels of the OT Prop-Ed board somewhere. It is an exhaustive read as I recall.
