QMX New Serenity / Enterprise

Is is just me or does the paint job look like a 5 year old did it? Especially for a model that is as pricey as this one? And the detail does not look crisp. I would have expected much more from them at this level. I have seen much better work from some of the modelers here on the board. Perhaps they need new talent?

JMHO

These pictures were taken "VERY" close to focus on the detail of the model work. The weathering of the BDR, and I'm sure the landed version, is perfect. It's meant to look old, beaten and repaired with riveted panels like the filming miniatures and the solid models.

A couple of other differences between the two:

That explains it. I was wondering why the Qmx looked funny. Thanks for clearing that up. Still a bit pricey though ;)

Perfect? Hardly, I mean, just look at that top image, it's obvious they had masked by that panel and used an airbrush with a dirt color on it. It looks terrible, they didn't even mask very well since it's going across panel lines at the top.

It's the same all across the mesh. And it's weird how the paint has changed. They did a better paint job in some ways on the BDR when they first started (although the Serenity logo wasn't done very well at the beginning) but for instance they kept on adding more and more green paint on the mess hall, now on this landed version it's got way way too much.

It's a real shame too, since it was a pretty good model they started with.

OK, I can't speak for the new replica for I haven't seen one personally. I just know the paint on my BDR is "very" impressive. And we do know that prototypes don't always have the final quality or paint scheme as the production units.

A prototype should have better paint than production

And from the BDR--that's got lots of issues as well. Generally bland weathering and lots of simplification so they could paint things with an airbrush. And missing too many paint details.

Its the Polar Lights Refit, you can buy it in a kit and build it yourself. Or pay 5K for thiers. Either way you get a done up PL kit

You're oversimplifying just a little aren't you? If I had the skills, knowledge and talent (and luck) to make it happen anywhere close to the quality of "theirs," which I do not, it would take me—as it would take any modeller, really—countless weeks, even months, and for some, years—to build it right, paint it right, decal it right and light it up right. Not to mention the materials cost which would not be insignificant. Put all that together—with particular emphasis on the intense hours involved--and $5K is not so much. But think about it realistically. Most modellers cannot match this skill. Those who can, would spend a lot of time, money and energy to do so. A desired result would not be so easily attainable—but if achieved would be very satisfying. If you're among this small talented group and have the time and the desire, go for it; your destiny awaits you.

Like i said build it yourself or buy theirs..... Sheeeeesh :unsure

I wonder if the landed version of Serenity will be cheaper since it looks like they've removed some of the finer details and it most likely doesn't have lights etc.

I saw it this past weekend at Dragon*Con and it looks very nice. The engines at least rotate if they don't fold (which would be pretty hard to pull off due to their size and weight). The lit version is WAY out of my price range, but the landed version (if it's cheaper) could be a nice substitute.
