QMX Fruity Oaty Bar Lithograph... I don't understand.

Well... I got an eMail from QMX so that I would Have the opportunity to buy the lowest possible print # of this SERENITY related print.

Now I love the Firefly/Serenity material. I consider Firefly to be some of the best if not the best SF television of this decade. I have a set of travel posters that will look wonderful on the wall ... if I ever open a science fiction bookstore.

But $39.00 for what is basically a glorified poster? I mean c'mon. I've known the founder of QMX for over ten years and consider him a good friend. Even though his involvement with the company these days is minimal, I have every reason to wish QMX success....

But jeez. What is the business model here? 1,000 prints at an overpriced $40.00. So even before associated overhead, production costs and shipping ... well, profit here is not that impressive at the corporate level.

So what is the plan here? Is this all they've got? Posters, plushes and little plasic anime versions of the characters? WTF?!? What happened to that extremely cool Creature from the Black Lagoon hand they were gonna do? They had the rights. They did the initial advertising. There's only about three generations of Universal Monster lovers out there waiting for something like that.

What happened to the Studio Scale Firefly? The Reaver exclusive? What happened to the prop company that we were once excited about?

Is this where the bar is set for QMX? $40.00 posters and bobble-heads that don't bobble?

I have known a founder of QMX for a long time too, so I can say to you, "You did not expect something like this?" with a strait face.

It is all about money my friend, and just how stupid they think we are.

Good to see that the Firefly model is still in the works. I'm actually eagerly awaiting the metal/wood Mal pistol, but I haven't seen any status updates about that. :cry

And I do agree that I wish there were fewer posters and trinkets (although these are very well done). I want to see more high-end props.

The founder you speak of no longer has any affiliation with QMx. The decision to make $40 paper products and $50 figurines is part of a new business model being driven by new Serenity-loving management. On a side note, I imagine Geoffrey Mandel's hand is ready to fall off by now.

To the best of my knowledge they still have not delivered fully on the Mal Pistols and 'Abbott' Dracula Ring, IMO they hit huge road blocks on everything except paper props... But, when it comes to paper props they are pros and seem to churn out some great paper products reliably, it's no doubt they would continue to focus on what they have a track record of actually being able to deliver and do well...

When they first materialized I had some high hopes, but as the months ticked away for the most part I have given up hope... I really wanted the Mal pistol they originally planned, it's too bad it fell flat on it's face...

I understand that, Gary. That is why I posted:

Inexplicably, I have a soft spot in my heart for this mutant, ******* child of his, no matter how pointless and pathetic its prolonged existance seems to be. I mourn what might have been, that is all.

I got that newsletter, I thought $40 was a mite expensive too.

To be honest I don't think I'd purchase anything QMx have to offer at the moment, besides their "'Verse map", which does look really, really cool. I thought they were going to be an awesome replica prop company for Firefly/Serenity stuff, and was really excited about the metal Mal pistol, but that looks like it didn't turn out too well. I don't want to particularly want to buy a resin replica.

I don't like whining about them, because I always used to support them, but I hoped they'd offer some more high-end stuff. I wish them well in the paper prop and Anime-like toy business, I suppose.

Count me in as one of those that was hoping for more props. I'm not too interested in posters, animé-inspired statues and such, but I think that a major part of Firefly/Serenity fandom are.

I very much hope that we'll all be able to afford the Firefly model when it's done, because the workmanship is incredible, but honestly, I suspect it'll be priced even higher than the MR Falcon.

the poster is nice enough but $40 for something that was offered on therpf for free, I mean it is only a larger version of this wrapper

I don't mean to be the devil's advocate here, but 40 bucks for a limited edition, 24x36 lithograph on 100lb paper signed by the artist is actually pretty cheap. It isn't "just a big picture of the wrapper", it's a poster designed for (but eventually unused) in the film. It is also a high quality lithograph, not a cheap poster printed on thin, cheap poster paper. It is an interesting piece of graphic art at a reasonable price. If you don't want one, don't buy one; simple as that.

The inmates are running the asylum.

With all the neat hand props available to be replicated, they roll out yet another low-cost high-markup obscure piece of paper. Oh, wait...it is too hard to prototype a prop and get it made in China, but easy to fire up the copy machine and churn out some huge-markup junk.

:confused

Only a weirdo from Michigan would think there is any value to a limited edition 1000 pc. run of something only 235 people want.

Something about the cold and snow and lack of sunshine makes you people... uh, wait a minute....

:lol:angel

Like I've said before... here in Michigan, 20 degrees, we pack up the kids and go to the beach! 10 degrees... we might put on a T-Shirt! :)

Well at least it keeps Whitefall and Mandell with a steady cashflow.

But add me to the list of those that would like to see some more higher end stuff coming out.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for some higher end props! I'd love a metal and wood Mal pistol, or any number of Firefly and Serenity props. I'm just saying that the lithograph they are offering isn't a cheap print or photocopy, it is a serious piece of art for a good price, and it isn't just a blow up of something offered for "free" (and un-licensed) here on the forum.
