QMX Enterprise?

Publicity of this kind of money-grab would be a great opportunity for some PR for Private builders to drum up some business. I know that it's the way I'd prefer to go for a high-quality, properly lit TMP Enterprise.

In the past Lee similar items have been referred to as Studio Scale. That it's not accurate in this case, there is a history of these and similar products ending up here. Is it causing you some pain? Despite its PL origin, it's not really a model as advertised.

In the past, some folks forgot why this forum was originally created, which was as a meeting place for the builders of same-scale replicas of production-built miniatures.

Those of us who were around when it was created have been trying to keep things on-topic lately, and now there is a stuck thread:

What this forum is all about...

which is pretty straightforward on, well, what this forum is all about.

There are many other, more suitable places, at the RPF and elsewhere, for collectors to discuss collectibles, including those that purport to be "Studio Scale".

Nicely put Kevin, pure and simple, this is not a studio scale subject, just a model, of a model, so it belongs in the general forum, no pain Tiberious, just a niggle that folks are too ignorant to know the difference.

THANK YOU ralphee and others, I posted on here a while back about this not belonging here and it amazed me how everybody just ignored the fact and kept on going....... and you newbies REALLY have to read and follow the guidelines BEFORE posting!

Hey, those "Spirit Animals" aren't cheap you know.

I'd probably have to charge $5K for full on Enterprise.

If you've never done one full on painted and lighted. I really don't think you have a right to *****, 'cause you just don't know.

That aztec thing is a *****, if you want it right.

So the Qmx model is actually quite a deal, since for $5K the studio is getting their licensing fees, and Qmx pays for their larger overhead. Good to know!

IMO A LOT revolves around your hourly rate and how many hours you have into it, and of course licensing rates...

So lets say you have a few hundred in supplies and the stand stand and lets remove some for licensing...

Lets say $4250 left to fudge with...

Now how many hours does the modeler invest from start to finish? And I assume this is a pro-modeler so he isn't charging $5/hour for his services...

From some basic math you can see $1000s add up real quick...

$30/hour 100 hours build time = $3000

BTW 30/hour is only $60,000 a year, hardly out of the ballpark...

Can it be built from start to finish in 100 hours? I have zero clue but I know I have killed 100s of hours on smaller models without even blinking...

Heck even if it only takes 1 minute to install each of the 180 LEDs that is 3 hours killed, time flies if you really start and stop a stopwatch...

There is certainly the fact that you will get better with each build and the 'assembly' line aspects will cut into the time but I'm still guessing there is a boat load of hours into each one...

In the end it's WAY out of my league but there are no doubt people who will jump in and feel justified in spending the cash and enjoy it just the same without any regret...

To each according to his budget!!! I won't lie, if money grew from a tree in my yard, I'd be on it so quick it would make your head spin. This model has all the bells and whistles I love for the Enterprise refit. But back down here in my real world, it's way out of my budget. Gonna have to figure out how to do the buildup myself. :)

Maybe we can work on this project together. I've wanted one myself for years and I think this will be the first model I build to get back in the swing. I know, not really a "warm up" type of build huh?:lol

Good points. I agree. $5k sounds like a lot of money, and it is. But this project would require a lot of time and a lot of skill. The end result, if all goes half as well as hoped, is a relatively unique custom product. The blood and sweat going into it deserves compensation. And like exoray suggested, $30/hr is not a lot for this level of skill.

Indeed it is. Their $30/hr skill level is so spectacular that they thought it would be a good idea to make the watered on decals look painfully obvious.

Thanks Lee, I'm in total agreement with you, it isn't a studio scale replica and by letter of the law it belongs elsewhere. Mods should probably move it. Thanks for the friendly response, it says a LOT about you!

-... . .- --.. I didn't start this thread here.....

That said, while I see that there's some labor involved in QMx's product I don't see that the quality compares to so many of the builds that members here and elsewhere have created and I just see this as an unfortunate abuse of a fan's love for the ship. I hope that some of those builders out there make their money off their labor of love instead.

Still no response to my request for more details from QMx, I'll share what they respond with....if they respond.

It'll be interesting to see if this thing has any takers!

$30 was only a number I tossed out there to show how fast dollars get gobbled up, also to note a billed $30/hour only yields about $20/hour pay after taxes due for the shop making them... If you actually want to make $30/hour you have to bill upwards of $45/hour and the gobbles even quicker...
